THE most unusual competition of the year was held at the Rib- blesdale Camera Club, when members judged panels of three related images and montages of up to six photographs. Seventeen entrants and a very
high standard made the judging hard. However, Stephen Robinson’s
“A Walk in the Park” came top. It was judged as an outstanding technical achievement. His montage was of different

species of birds photographed in the Castle grounds, it also had a strong educational theme. Graham Dudley’s excellent
panel ‘Arcade Symmetry” was placed second, while another technical triumph was new member Sue Marsden’s third- placed “Kitchen Collage”. Roland Landsell, another new
member, was in fourth place with a charming panel of three pictures from his own garden called “Autumn Gold”.

A CAPACITY audience at Ribblesdale Camera Club’s weekly meeting listened intently to pro fessional environmental photographer Ashley Cooper’s presentation on “Global Warming Images”. The three most impor
tant greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. These were found naturally and without them the earth would be very cold. However, the balance

imaginative uses of the format - and certainly the funniest - was John Fletcher’s, pictured above, “I could kick myself!”. The next club meeting on
March 11th will be the Lan cashire and Cheshire Mono chrome print folio. Information on the club,
which meets at West Bradford Village Hall on Tuesdays at 7-30 p.m., can be obtained from the chairman on 01254 822921.
was being disturbed by man’s activities and the earth is getting warmer. The average temperature of the earth has risen by 0.7‘’C over about 20 years, but crucially, areas of arctic ice and permafrost have risen by 40°G. This has caused melting
of the icecap, forest fires in Alaska and the onset of pests such as spruce bark beetles, normally found in more southerly areas. Very high quality photographs were shown of the damage in this area, lightened with traveller’s tales of living
\vith an Eskimo family on a remote island. Equally of concern was the Ecuador rain forest, where shortage of water was the problem, and the Pacific, where ris ing sea temperatures were killing the coral. Melting of the ice was raising sea lev els and the Thames Barrier is more and more in use. However it was not designed for increasing depths of water. Many major cities could
become uninhabitable through flooding in the future, if sea levels rise by seven metres, as predicted. More immediately, island communities such as Tuvalu could be wiped out within a few years. Already some offshore islands have been reduced to sand banks and salt water is causing crop failures. If the present rate of temperature rise continues tor 100 years, a 60°C rise is predicted and the world would only sup port a third of its present population. A similar pro portion of living species would become extinct. Rather than despair, a major movement towards
sustainable power genera tion must be made in the next 10 tol5 years. If this is not done, the balance could be tipped too far to recover. An individual could do lit tle alone, but a concerted movement by everybody to use less energy would buy the time needed to install the clean power generation needed. Commenting on Mr Cooper’s presentation, club secretary Ken Geddes said; “It was thought-provoking, refreshingly positive and free from preaching or hid den agendas. Just estab lished facts backed up by astonishing and disturbing photography, or acknowl edgement where additional study is in progress, and a hopeful message at the end. Members were still dis cussing and asking ques tions 20 minutes after the end.” Information on the club,
which meets at the West Bradford Village Hall on Tuesdays at 7-30 p.m., can be obtained from the chair man on 01254 822921 or the secretary on 01200 423474.
