Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, March 6th, 2008 23 Performing arts centre unveiled

REPRESENTATIVES from the Ribble Valley were among the guests as a local college unveiled its new performing arts centre. The O’Neill Academy for Per

forming Arts at St Mary’s College in Blackburn was opened by Peter Salmon, chief creative director for BBC Vision. Among those invited to the

unveiling were the head girl and boy from St Augustine’s RC High School and Rowland High School - Samantha Harper, Joe Basquill, Amelia James and 'Tim Ankers. The new £2.5m. building has a

200-seat theatre with the latest lighting and sound technology, as well as electronically activated seating. There are two drama stu dios, each with their own lighting and sound facilities, a dance stu dio, facilities for music and music technology, as well as classrooms and a suite of recording and prac tice studios. A programme of events has already been planned for the new

building, including concerts, an “Oscars-style” night for film and media students, visits from a wide range of professional compa nies and the college’s own Total Theatre production of “Twelfth Night” in June. Pictured at the opening with

Finch (68) had become a familiar fig ure in her home village, using her elec tric wheelchair to get out and about. Born and brought up in Preston,

she trained as an SRN at the then Preston Royal Infirmary, later going on to become a midwife. After working at the hospital where

she trained, she then moved to the Ribble Valley - first to Clitheroe and then, in 1970, becoming Whalley’s district midwife. She was diagnosed with MS in

1972. Since then she has become a heroine to family, friends and carers,

for the positive manner in which she dealt with every disability she faced through her illness. Her sister, Mrs Dorothy Battersby,

said: “No one ever heard her moan about her condition. She never ques tioned why she had it. She would always find a way round any disabili ty her illness brought. She suffered very bravely over the years.” She added: “I t was typical of her

that she would help train the nurses sent in to care for her, giving them advice about the best way to do things. She always had a positive out look on life.” Her funeral took place last Friday at Accrington Crematorium.

A PLANNING applica tion has been submitted to Ribble Valley Borough Council for the demoli tion of a range of modern agricultural buildings and the erection of seven holiday cottages in three separate stonebuilt build ings. A storage building and the formation of parking and turning areas. Comments on the pro
