Lions bitten

SkiptonLMS ...........3 ClitheroeLions . . . .1 LAST season’s finalists' Clitheroe Lions bowed out of the Northern Plant Hire Trophy at the second round stage at the hands of Craven League Premier Divi sion leaders Skipton LMS. ■ A patched up away

team started very brightly, and could have been two up in the first 10 minutes, with efforts from Martin Aspinwall and Holgate narrowly missing the target, with the keeper beaten all ends up. However as the game

progressed, the home team started to get more of a grip on mid- field, and static Lions defending led to several chances, two of which were taken shortly before half-time. The Clitheroe team

felt that they were still in with a chance in the second half, and for the opening 20 minutes, had nearly all of the posses sion, with Paul Clegg making incisive runs and Gaughan dictating play in midfield. They couldn’t, how

ever, find tha t final killer ball. With both centre

halves pushing fonvard, gaps were left at the back, and man-of-the- match Mashiter was involved in no less than eight one-on-one saves, the strikers unable to find a way past him. Inevitably, after a

barrage of break aways, LMS netted their clinching third goal. To the Lions’ credit,

they kept going, and a punt upfield was headed on by Jimmy Clegg into the path of Aspinwall, who

finished

neatly.Minutes later, Steve Gaughan was sent clear on goal, but before he could finish, he was grabbed around the throat and pulled down by the Skipton keeper, and left in some distress, needing urgent treat ment.

Bizarrely, the referee

refused to either give a penalty or send the keeper off. The game ended on a

further sour note, with tackles flying and sever al yellow cards dished out to the home team. The conduct and gen

eral sportsmanship dur ing and after the game shown by the LMS team left a bitter taste in the Lions’ mouth, and they eagerly await the return league fix ture. However, first up on

Saturday, they have yet another tough league fixture at Waddingtbn.

FC United...................3 Clilheroe............ .0 A RORY Patterson brace, accompanied by an eighth- minute Simon Carden strike, overshadowed Clitheroe's endeavour at Gigg Lane last Wednesday night. FC United were as

impressive as ever on the counter attack with their sweeping, accurate play, but not three goals better than the Blues, who had their share of chances. Scott Redhead was in

impressive form again with great deliverys from the wing, and before the home side took the lead, Gary Jackson had a header tipped away by Aaron Grundy. But again Clitheroe con

ceded another poor early goal when a ball over the top wasn't dealt with, flicked forward to the bye line and then laid across the box for Carden to tuck away and leave the Blues in disarray. The rest of the first half

proved even enough, and from another Redhead cross, Joel Pilkington had a chance cleared off the line. Shortly after, United's

Stuart Rudd crossed per fectly for Jerome Wright, only for the forward to put wide from six yards out. And James Mann kept

out Chris Baguley at his near post. Carl Lomax struck a

solid volley from the edge of the area that Grundy had to tip out for a corner before the break, but Jack- son made way for Danny Toronczak at half-time, the forward suffering from a swollen knee. United striker Patterson

then doubled their lead on the hour with a well-driven free kick. The Gigg Lane side’s

leading scorer lamped the ball home from just out side the area, straight past

an ineffective wall and a rooted Mann. FC United continued to

be rampant on the break, and would have netted more but for Mann pulling off some fantastic saves. But the Blues sustained

their own period of pres sure in the home half, and should really have done better when a move involv ing the fresh legs of substi tute John Osborne, Red head, David Hankin and Lomax resulted in the lat ter having a shot cleared off the line. Clitheroe almost tried to

walk the ball into the back of the net in the second half, while United swept forward with inch-perfect balls tha t their pacey strikers thrived on. One, two three passes

was all it took to unlock a path on goal as Jonathan Smith, Paul Osborne and Russ Clarke were kept bu.sy. A fantastic right wing

cross traversed the width of the pitch to find its man, Baguley at the back post, whose shot on goal was blocked out by Mann, who then dived across goal to deny Patterson what should have been an easy rebound. And the Clitheroe keep

er almost denied the FC United striker again for his second goal when another raking move resulted in Wright laying the ball across goal for his strike partner at the back post. Mann got a hand to it,

but couldn't prevent Unit ed's third goal at the death.

Green’s county cup dream is over

Uursl Green.................0 Rossendale Amateurs .1 HURST Green’s Lan cashire Amateur Cup bid ended at the semi-final stage at Shawbridge. The Greens twice hit the

woodwork, but ultimately could not find the net against their Rossendale. A crowd of over 250

gathered, with excellent support from Hurst Green and the surrounding area to witness this tight game. Hurst Green made one

change, as Phil Walker returned to the centre of defence, while Tom Bam- ber shifted to left back and Oily Bolton dropped to the bench. The villagers decided to

kick against the blustery wind in the first half, and started well on a sticky pitch that did nothing to help the passing games of both sides. The Green defence had

to defend for long spells of the first half as they bat tled against the strong wind, and Rossendale could have taken the lead as early as the fifth minute as Bamber tried to clear the danger only for the ball to be deflected back into the box, with keeper Steve Young stranded. Luckily for Green,

Coupe beat the Rossendale forward to the loose ball. Hurst Green began to

find spaces behind the defence, and wingers Tip- ton and Alex Young forced several corners. The locals should have taken the lead after 10

minutes as an in-swinging corner found Coupe, whose header rattled the crossbar, only for Bamber to nod the rebound over. Rossendale’s only other

chance worthy of note came from a free kick which struck the post. Green then forced a

great save out of the keep er as a Seedall free kick was tipped over, but the game was held up for 10 minutes as the Rossendale number 10 wasstretchered off following an innocuous challenge from Malley. Hurst Green looked to

use the conditions to their advantage in the second half in a bid to break the deadlock. But as the game wore

on, Rossendale began to keep the ball a lot better. (ireen responded by

bringing on Bolton, and this enabled them to play the football to which they are accustomed, and Seedall really should have given them the lead as he fired straight at the keeper from only 10 yards. The game looked to be

heading for extra time when, on 75 minutes, an attempted clearance from Coupe ricocheted off the ' back of a Rossendale head and into the path of the striker, who finished neat ly into the far corner. Green attacked for the

remaining 15 minutes of the game, and pushed Coupe forward, which caused problems for the Rossendale back line, resulting in a couple of

efforts which didn’t really trouble the keeper. However, Danny Walker

thought he had brought Hurst Green level with only five minutes remain ing, as he twisted and turned en route to goal and

. unleashed a 20-yard effort which beat the keeper and cannoned back off the underside of the bar and onto the line. Rock Rovers.................2 Hurst Green.................2 A STUART Malley head er five minutes from time rescued a point for Hurst Green, as they laboured to a draw in Barrowford. Green made three

changes to the team that went out of the Lancashire Amateur Cup, as Oily Bolton replaced Simon Tipton, Mark Young replaced the injured Steve Young, and Zac Foley came in tor Alex Young. The extreme weather

and a poor playing surface ensured that the game was never going to be one for the football purist. The home side started

brightly, with the wind at their backs, with Green camped inside their own half, but chances for the home side were few and far between, despite their ter ritorial advantage. Hurst Green uncharac

teristically ensured their hosts took the lead as they lost the ball from their o\vn throw in, and a through ball caught Green square as Alex Heap ran through and finished well, despite Young getting a touch.

The visitors looked very

shaky a t the back, and nearly conceded a second as Walker lost possession, and the Rock forward brought a great save from Young, as he tipped his effort onto the post. With the wind continu

ing in the second half. Green played with more confidence and began to create chances. Foley.lashed a vollev

over the bar from close range, and Danny Walker had a superb volley blocked. The visitors created cor

ner after corner, which the home side defended well, but Green’s equaliser came from a slightly deflected free kick, Seedall driving in from 20 yards. Hurst Green had the

momentum, and a winner looked odds on, but more poor defending enabled Rock to regain the lead. A delightfully curled

free kick found the unmarked John Whiteside at the back post, and his header beat Young. With five minutes to go,

an in-swinging Seedall cor ner found Malley at the near post, and his header somehow found the back of the net. Malley could have won

it right at the death as his 20-yard effort just shaved the outside of the post, but Green had to be content with a point. Green’s next game is on

Saturday a t Towneley Park against Goodshaw United, kick-off 2-15 p.m.

Rimington eight clear at top of the table

Riminglon............................3 Settle ....................................0 RIMINGTON extended their lead at the top to eight points thanks to a comfortable win over bottom-of-the-table Settle. Settle made the home side work

hard for a victory that should have been more convincing. Tom O’Neill had a chance in

the first minute, but his shot went wide from 18 yards with the keeper stranded. As O’Neill ran through the

defence, he was then brought down just outside the box, but Jon Penman’s free kick was hit tamely at the keeper. Another free kick brought the

same result, this time Walms- ley’s effort failing to trouble the keeper, who also had a let off when he failed to deal with an

■ inswinging O’Neill corner, the resultant goal ruled out for a foul, which puzzled almost every player on the pitch. It was left to McLean to show

the way again, flicking the ball up before unleashing an unstop pable volley into the far corner to make it 1-0. Tragedy struck for Rick Whal-

ley as he caught his studs in the pitch, which resulted in damaged ligaments, an injury which could end his season prematurely. Joe McTear came on, and

Mankowski moved to full back, but it did not hinder Rimington’s domination. Danny Paton scored early in

the second half when McTear did well on the right, his cross to the back post headed back by Penman for Paton to finish from close range. The game was over as a con

test when McLean released Paton, who raced clear and stroked the ball past the keeper. Walmsley almost curled one

in, but saw his shot rebound to safety off the upright, and O’Neill fizzed an effort just over. The visitors almost grabbed a

consolation, but Kershaw was

relieved to see a lob hit This was another im p la n t

win, and the way in which Rim ington dominated, especially in the second half, pleased manag er Terry Braithwaite, whose side travel to Enfield on Saturday. He said: “All that matters now

is tha t we keep winning, and hope the chasing teams continue to drop points. But we will take one game at a time and see where we end up.”
