ClUIieroe....................10 Caniforlh..................26 OLD friends and rivals Carnforth were the wel come of visitors to Little- moor, but the hosts were far too charitable, gifting them three unanswered tries. With this the final in a
three “test” series over the course of this season, it was nicely balanced at one win apiece. But it was Carnforth
who played the more con sistent rugby. Their pack was well drilled and large ly on top at scrum time, leaving the potential of Clitheroe's three-quarter line mostly unfulfilled. Clitheroe were soon up
against it, the Carnforth pack pegging the home side back with some pun ishing drives. I t was no real surprise when they rumbled over for their opening score. Their second came
through a lack of concen tration, communication and commitment in defence and the Camforth hooker burst through a static defensive line and for a try. After a dressing down at
half-time, instead ot com ing out firing, Clitheroe almost hit the self distinct button; slow ball from a ruck led to a charged down kick and suddenly the town team were 19-0 down. At last Clitheroe began
to play like they know they can. The pack got the bit
between their teeth and made good ground with a drhing maul. From the resulting
melee, back rower Simon Cowgill claimed the touch
Charitable hosts gift hat-trick of scores
down to get the locals back in touch. Carnforth, however,
were stung into action and their stand-off bounced off a couple of tackles to put them further ahead. At least Clitheroe fin
ished strongly when a clas sic catch and drive saw Ed Thornber in for the score. On Saturday, Clitheroe travel to Thornton Cleve-
leys. Rossendale 3 rd s ........ 20 Clilheroe Caraliers . .12 THE Cavaliers were left to ponder what might have been after this defeat. In the opening 10 min
utes, Clitheroe stood tall and defended against the solid-looking Rossendale centres. However, through a
lapse of concentration in the backs, the Rossendale inside centre scored a soft try, and managed to carve out two more unconverted scores. Thankfully, before half
time the visitors got their game together, and through a well-worked move out wide, speedy winger Brian Wood man aged to sneak in the right hand corner. Half-time couldn't come
soon enough, and some stern words from captain Dan Jefferson brought the team back into focus. The second half saw a
different Clitheroe. They dominated in the forwards and managed to take four scrums against the head and disrupt all of the Rossendale line-outs. With so much ball avail
able, they should have made some significant in roads. However, poor exe cution at the base of the scrum saw the ball
turnover too easily, and the advantage was lost. Rossendale were also
clinical at the rucks and bullied Clitheroe off the ball, and it was from one of these rucks that they man aged to secure ball and score their fourth try of the game. Clitheroe believed they
could still win the game and dug deep. They played their best
period of the game, with Paul Warren making ground alongside Brothy, and alongside Michael Thornber they managed to break the gain line. Keiron Keough was on
hand, after returning from injury, to score just on the right hand side of the post, which he also converted. With minutes to play,
the Cavaliers were hopeful of an upset, but the wise old heads of Rossendale snuffed them out of the game with deep kicks into the corner. The Cavaliers entertain
Tyldesley on Saturday (kick-off 2-30 p.m.). Clitheroe Under 14s . .10 Pendle.........................22 CLITHEROE continued to show their improvement against Pendle. Pendle kicked-off with
the wind in their favour, and were camped in the Clitheroe 22 for the major ity of the opening exchanges. This pressure paid off
within five minutes, with the large forwards doing the damage up front, and a try was subsequently con ceded, albeit ivith a hint of a forward pass in the build up.
Clitheroe were certainly
not fazed by the start, however, only 20 minutes
pm m ^ I i «
had elapsed when Pendle’s prop barrelled over for their second try, and the conversion meant Clitheroe were quickly on the wrong end of a 12-0 scoreline. Once again, the town
team refused to be beaten and great in-your-face tackling from Will Spence- ley-Jones and Francis Devine meant that they turned round at half-time 12 points behind. The whole team showed
that they were converting what they have learned on the training ground into game play, and their res olute defence appeared to be slowing the Pendle players. So, with th e wind at
their backs, following a bullocking run from Joe Shorrock th a t initially cleared a dangerous attack from Pendle, Matt Cole found a clear route down the left wing to score a great 60-metre try. Pendle were quick to
respond, and Clitheroe again found themselves down by two tries, with the score at 22-5 to the vis itors. The closing 10 minutes
or so was perhaps Clitheroe's best period. They kept Pendle under
pressure throughout, and great runs from Seb Hem- ing\vay, man-of-the-match Shorrock, Tom Walton and Thomas Backhouse led to Pendle's line eventu ally being breached, when Hemingway gathered up a hobbling ball and squeezed over for the last score of the game. On Sunday, the side xvill
entertain Fylde, kick-off 10-30 a.m.
