TWO Kibble Valley men are ready to face the challenge of a lifetime. • ■ Huge waves, sleeping whales which when startled can cause serious damage to a small boat, and the possibility of bump ing into sunken containers which have fallen off tankers; all await when th e y - undertake an epic journey sailing thou- sandsof miles across the Atlantic Ocean. . 'Russell Morgan, of Ribchester, and Martin Kenyon, of Ciitheroe, along with ' Russell's brother-in-law Alastair Sames, of Mellor, and Neil Ainsworth, of Black- bum, are set to fly to America to set sail across the Atlantic, accompanied by expe-. rienced skipper Damian Likley. - Their boat, renamed Beluga, is a 30 ton

Fleming 55 motor yacht, Mth an overall length of 60 feet and two Caterpillar diesel engines. . I t is quite an unusual feat to tak e a .

motor yacht across the Atlantic, as it is more commonly undertaken by sailing yachts, but this boat is equipped Mth the ' huge fuel tanks needed for one stretch of 2,000 miles doing eight knots. ■: The epic challenge ■will take one month

to complete, starting on June 7th, depend-: ing on the weather of course, with a four day trip from Fort Lauderdale, where the boat is being prepared, to Bermuda. Here they will spend two or three days sorting o u t any small problems th ey m ig h t encounter before setting off on a nine day trip to the Azores. From there they sail th Madeira and on to Gibraltar, before reach ing their final destination which is Menor ca.

"The weather, conditions need to be

almost perfect and this is one of the best times to do the crossing," said Russell. I t has. the correct currents and trade winds,' but we must make sure we are away from , Florida by the middle of June before the hurricane season starts," he added. . . . "The main reason we wanted to underr take this journey was the opportunity to bring the British designed boat, built in 1995, back to this side of the Atlantic. I n ' one respect it is a commercial venture,

’’ -Whilst the NHS'S al\A/^y sometimes it's safe

tSkUe yourself. Vou can

because of the money exchange rate the ideal opportunity arose to buy the boat at a good price and hopefully sell it on at a profit, but also it will be an adventure that the whole crew is looking foryvard to experiencing. We are not taking this light-. ly, a lot of planning has gone into the trip and we have invested in a satellite com munication system which will allow us to do a blog from the boat."

‘ Martin, (46) and Russell (45), have

been friends for many years, in fact they have been rally car navigator and driver ■ together for the past four years, but have 25 years’experience in the sport. Martin-is the proprietor of the Dog

Inn, in Wellgate, and also owns the Tan ning Studio on Moor Lane. He is married. to Claire and they have two sons aged 21 and 19. Martin has quite a lot of sailing experience and is proficient in motor boat radio communication and boat handling, b ut has never a ttempted anything as daunting as this.

- ■ ■Russell, who lives in Ribchester with

his \vife, Philippa, also has two sons aged 17 and 19 and runs a family motor trade business. He has a wealth of experience-. and has been on th e high seas many* times, once sailing from Eastbourne to?- the Mediterranean, through the Bay o f : Biscay. He is quite capable of skippering the boat, but for safety reasons decided to - ■invite along fellow Englishman Damian- who has crossed the Atlantic nine times in s

' all. The culmination of Martin and Rus sell's rallying achievements was winning the British Historic Championship for ;; 2007, in their Mark LEscort car, a series;-; of rallies held throughout the country.' Now both their two elder sons have start ed rallying together. Anyone who would like to keep a watch on how the journey is progressing c a n ' : -visit '. website: http://weblog.skymate.com/sm/page/bel- uga to find th e i r p o s i t io n and keep abreast of the information they post;: •■iT Our photograph shows intrepid sailors
