SLAIDBURN held its annual May Queen Festival on a sunny, but blustery Bank Holi

day Monday. ; The day began with a service conducted by Geoff

Garnett at St Andrew’s Church, with lessons read by retiring May Queen Alice Kenyon and her suc cessor, Elizabeth Parsons. Mr John King Wilkinson presented dictionaries

to children leaving primary school this year and also presented 50p pieces'to children at the service. Slaidburn Silver Band played at church and then led the procession around the village and down to the village green. They were followed in the proces sion by the two queens and their retinues and Slaid burn Brownies. Once at the village green, the new May Queen

was crowned by Jean Lawson. The fancy dress com petition was won by George Ireland as Bob the Builder and Slaidburn won the football competition against Dunsop Bridge. The afternoon was rounded of with sports on the village green. Our picture shows the new Slaidburn May Queen, Elizabeth Parsons, with her retinue at St Andrew’s Church,

(s) . ■ WHILE going through Slaidburn Silver Band’s

music library recently, conductor John Cowking, discovered a century-old programme.

John writes: “I unearthed an old programme of

events for Slaidburn’s Whit-Monday Festival of June 1908. It shows the timetable for the day’s fes tivities at Slaidbum, a'list of the children’s races and the accounts for the previous year’s festival. “However, what caught my eye was the band’s

programme of music for that day which contained, the usual selections of music typical of that era.; Some of that music still exists, although in a bat-;' tered condition with some parts missing, and one piece in particular called ‘Village Carnival’ was almost a complete set.

' “I though it would be fitting to try and perform; this piece 100 years later at the’Slaidburn May., Queen Festival of 2008 and contacted the original . publishers of the piece to see if parts were still avail-

. able. . “The publishers, Wright and Round, who publish

the Band’s march ‘Slaidburn’, checked their archives and-provided the hand with a full set of parts to rehearse and perform from. “As a result the band performed ‘Village Carni

val’ at the Slaidbum May Queen festival almost 100 years to the day since it was first heard

- “There is also a family connection for me too. My grandfather was a member of the band in 1908 and

no doubt played the piece on that day.” Results from Slmdburn, Newton, Dunsop Bridge, Lane Ends

and Tosade May Queen Festival. Junior Races: 5 -7 years: Boys - Jack Wallbank, Tom Doherty, . Ewan Carlton-Whitaker. Girls - Isabel Alpe, Rebecca Bennett, . Jessica Bowen.
