Season ticket deal unveiled by Blues for friendly games

By Adrian Capstick

CLITHEROE FC are offering free entry to 10 pre-season games for all season ticket holders. Seven of the home fix

tures will involve the Uni- Bond F ir s t Division North side, and three will feature Blackburn Rovers Ladies, as both sides step up for their forthcoming campaigns. Season tickets are cur

rently on sale at a dis counted price, and will remain so until Sunday, July 8th, when the club hold th e ir open day a t Shawbridge. This will be the last

day anyone wishing to take advantage of the dis count will be able to pur chase their ticket, between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Blues have lined

up some challenging home fixtures against higher league opposition in their warm-up sched ule, against Accrington Stanley on Wednesday, July 11th (kick-off 7-30 p.m.), Blackburn Rovers

- % Meanwhile, Clitheroe's

fourth season in the Uni- Bond First Division looks as though it will throw up some new and interesting challenges for the Shaw bridge side. Fixtures for the restruc

(Saturday, July 14th, 7-30 p.m.), Barrow (Tuesday, July 17th, 7-30 p.m.), Hyde United (Saturday, July 21st, 3 p.m.), New Longton Rovers (Satur day, August 4th, 3 p.m.), Fleetwood Town (Tues day, August 7th, 7-30 p.m.) and Prescot Cables (Saturday, August 11th, 3

p.m.). Clitheroe's sole away

friendly is against Lee Sculpher's Ramsbottom United on Saturday, July 28th, kick-off 3 p.m. Rovers Ladies have yet

to announce all three pre season games, but fixtures against Premier League duo Doncaster Rovers Belles and Newcastle United have been pen cilled in for Sunday, July 29th and Sunday, August 5th.

tured Northern Premier League are not due for release until Monday, July 9th, but the Blues know who they will be playing next season, and what form the new 18- team UniBond League should take. At least one bumper

home crowd, and possibly two, is guaranteed against FC United of Manchester, whose following since for mation two seasons ago has brought a smile to non-league clubs wherev er they go. The reason the Blues

could play two league home games against the Bury-based club is that, due to there now being two leagues at Clitheroe's level, North and a South, with 18 teams in each, it was felt 34 fixtures wasn't enough to sustain the sides, so a further eight

fixtures have been pen cilled in. These additional fix

tures will see the league split in half, and Clitheroe play the eight teams, four a t home and four away, deemed to be closest to them geographically, of which FC United are one. The other seven teams

in Clitheroe’s group are Bamber Bridge, Chorley, Lancaster City, Radcliffe Borough, Rossendale United , Skelmersdale United and Woodley Sports. The other nine teams to

make up the league are Bradford Park Avenue, Bridlington Town, Cur- zon Ashton, Garforth Town, Harrogate Rail way, Mossley, Newcastle Blue Star, Ossett Albion and Wakefield. This Scottish Premier

League-style set up will be for just one transitional season as the UniBond League aims to increase the number of teams at this level to two teams of 20 and then to 22 over the next two seasons.

Sarah helps college to reach national final

CLITHEROE teenager Sarah Tomlin son helped Myerscough College Girls’ football team win the Northern College’s

Futsal title. And the side now look forward to a

place in the national final. The team, which includes 18-year-old

Sarah, turned on the style a t their first attempt in the sport, which is similar to five-a-side football but played with a smaller, heavier ball. The game encourages quick play and

skills, and there was no shortage of this in the girls’ performance. Throughout the tournament, the girls

won all five games they played, scoring 23 goals and conceding just one in the last minute of their final match. The squad was made up of girls who

are studying the National Diploma in Football, or the Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching at the college.

All girls played an equal part in the tournament and each contributed to the

team’s success. Laura Wallace, Football Tutor at

Myerscough College, said: “The girls worked very well as a team, with some excellent individual skills that would have impressed Ronaldo! They are now looking forward to representing Further Education Colleges in the National Finals in Sheffield in July.” The winning squad is made up of 17-

year-old Jenna Carroll from Preston, 16- year-old Abi Carr from Preston, 17-year- old Stacey Tomlinson from Kirkby Lons dale, 18-year-old Amy Foxcroft from Pre ston, 18-year-old Sam Pickup from Dar- wen, Sarah Tomlinson and 18-year-old Gemma Watson from Blackpool. The girls are pictured with their Tutor, Laura Wallace (s).

Jonny’s Euro test! MW r \ • &

CLITHEROE canoeist Jonny Schofield will be pad dling this weekend a t the European Championships in Pontevedra, Spain. The 21-year-old (pic

tured, left, s) won gold at the European Wild Water Championships in May, and bagged a seventh place fin ish in his first-ever Sprint World Cup event in the K2 500m event, alongside for mer Junior Marathon World Champion Ben Brown. Both have dominated

!

over the 500m distance in the domestic selection regat

tas in April and June. John Anderson, British

Canoeing’s Performance Director, said: “The Euro pean Championships are an important stepping stone for our team as we work towards the key event of the year, the World Champi onships, and Olympic qual ification. “Our athletes have pre

pared well and are looking forward to some excellent racing”. Team Manager Alan

Williams added: “The GBR team had some encouraging results in the early season

H

World Cup competitions. “The selections for our

Senior European champi onship team took place fol lowing the June regatta, and since then all the national squads have been training hard here in the UK. “The training has gone

well and athletes and coach es are looking forward to racing a t the European Championships. “We have very strong

crews in all the singles and double events and have made good progress devel oping our larger crew boats.”

_ LEADING scorer Geoff Young and Player of the Year Chris Oakley were the big winners at WFC Clitheroe's presen

tation. The management

would like to thank all who donated raffle and auction prizes, and con tributed to a successful night. Players are reminded
