Ashworth wins again!

MARK Ashworth contin ued his domination of the Clitheroe Golf Club Club Championship, despite the weekend’s poor weather doing it’s best to spoil the event.

Ashworth has claimed the

title six times in the last seven years, with only Roll Andrew breaking the sequence in 2001. Andrew threatened again

with the second round gross prize, but Ashworth came through with rounds of 72 and 71, giving him a four- shot cushion over Martin Cane. Cane’s previous success

was in 1999, but he lias fig ured prominently since, and was rewarded again for his 78,69 return. Nathan Dunn will surely

challenge Ashworth next year, as the youngster is fig uring in some prestigious events of late, and his gross 150 earned him third prize. Daniel Preedy’s effort saw

him take fourth spot. Andrew Heesom shot an

impressive first round 72 to earn himself more credit in Paul McEvoy’s shop, but fell away on day two, while Rob Andrew’s late flurry on Sun day was too late. John Whowell doesn’t say

much in the clubhouse, but lets his clubs do the talking on the course, and his 70, 73 returns gave him the best 36-hole nett prize. Paul Nightingale was two

shots off the pace with 145, and took the second nett prize from Philip Hanson after cards. Saturday’s best nett prize

went to Chris Connolly from the steady Colin Mustoe by one shot, with Colin’s 69 two shots better than Gary Speak. Carl Drinkwater pro

duced his round of the year in difficult conditions on Sunday, with a sparkling 74- 3-71. Michael Cook edged out

Springbok Archie Moro for second prize after cards. On Lady Captain’s Day,

Tracey Bentley’s S3-10-73 took first place after a card play-off with Debbie Catlow (90-17-73), with Sarah Wal ton’s 76 the best gross. Mary Eglin won the put

ting prize with 25, with Doreen Bolton nearest the pin on the 17th, and Sheila Riley nearest on the fifth. Marion Read won the

Senior Nine-Hole competi tion with 110-35-75. Chris Stokes’ best gross of

151 won the ladies’ 36-hole competition, also at Clitheroe. Helen Maginn (165) was

second, with the nett prize won by Tracy Bentley s 151. Stokes’ first round 77-6-71

was enough to win the LGU Medal Division One from Kath Townlcy (85-13-72), with Division Two won by Pat Murray 1109-25-84) on the card from Marian Niven (106-22-84). The weather proved kind

on Saturday for Richard Crosslev’s Captain's Dav at Whalley.

There was a strong turn

out, with John Kearsley (79- 10-69) coming out on top after a card play-off with Gary Bradley (80-11-69), ahead of John Heap (80-10- 70) in third place. Andrew Wray (74) won

the best gross prize, and David Booth (90-18-72) won the seniors’ section. Mark Tuley (38-6-32)

had the best hack nine, Chris Summers won the longest drive on the 14th hole, and Craig Gornall (87 inches) was nearest to the pin on the 18th hole. Vivien Birtwell also held

her Lady Captain’s Day at Whalley, with Jane Boxall a clear winner after going round in 80-13-67. Second, after cards, was

Wendy Green (102-27-75), ahead of Bridget Rees (103- 28-75). The best gross was

Daphne Dawson’s 80. It was a poignant week

end as Mytlon Fold hosted the inaugural Frank Harg reaves Memorial Trophy. The event, conceived as a

tribute to the President and founder of the club, who died just over a year ago, was played in a mood of cel ebration. For the second time in

recent weeks, Zac Ashworth claimed a major trophy, despite a seven-shot handi cap reduction, his 43 enough to hold off Luke Green (40). Steve Brooks (37) and

Simon Pilbin (36) took the Division One honours. Division Two winners

were Phil Chadwick (40) and Graham Plant (36), with Graham Landon (38) outpointing Terry Steer (36) to take the third tier. Lady Captain Joan

Sanderson continued her excellent form in the ladies’ event but her 32 points was only good enough for second place, as Alison Nuttall scored four points at the final hole to take the trophy with 33. A seniors trophy was also

awarded, with Tony Wil son's 38 points good enough to take the prize. The junior event was

claimed by Josh Davies on 37 points. The previous Saturday,

Mytton Fold held the Hall of Fame Medal, where members compete for a place in the regional final and raise money for Cancer Research. Matt Garner will repre

sent the club at the next round after a fine SS-20-68, with Chris Chadwick (75-5- 70) second. Keith Gill continued his

strong recent run with an 82-12-70 good enough for Division One honours from John Berry (81-11-70). Division Two prizes were

won by Barry Foxon (90-20- 70) and Chris Hughes (90- 20-70). and the Division Three honours were taken by Jim Bridge (96-23-73) and David Halsall (96-23- 73).
