Man badly hurt in violent street attack

by Faiza Afzaal

A CLITHEROE man remains in a serious condition in hospital a f te r being th e victim of a “violent and unprovoked attack”. The 29-year-old was walking home

after finishing his shift with a local com pany when he was set upon by a gang of four teenagers - one of whom was a girl. Detectives have launched a major

investigation into the attack, which occurred in broad daylight and has been described as “unnecessary and violent”. The incident took place about 3-30 p.m.

on Friday in the Woone Lane area of the town. Police said the victim sustained serious injuries when he was pushed by two of the teenagers - a girl and boy - into the path of an oncoming 4x4, which had to brake hard to avoid the collision. The black vehicle was driven by a woman who stopped and shouted at the attackers before driving off. Officers said the victim then flagged

down a passing male motorist driving a red car who drove him home.

The victim was admitted to Royal

Blackburn Hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries. Police investigations are continuing into

the attack and CCTV footage is being examined to trace whoever is responsible. DC William Biggar, of Clitheroe Police,

is leading the investigation and is keen for the driver of the 4x4 or any other passers- by who witnessed the assault to come for ward. He said: “This was a terrible and

unprovoked attack on a hard-working member of our community. “The victim is currently in hospital

sedated on morphine and due to his con dition, descriptions of the offenders responsible are limited. “We urgently need to speak to witness

es and the woman driver of the 4x4. Please call Clitheroe Police on 443344 or the free-and-condential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111 with information.” • Police are also reminding people of

the “Operation Erase” scheme, which sees officers hand out gift vouchers to the value of £30 to law-abiding members of the public who ring the police should they witness any criminal activity.

M is s in g mail mystery

REPORTS of an investigation over missing mail in Clitheroe were unconfirmed as we went to press. Residents in one area of Clitheroe contacted

the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times this week after several items of mail they were expecting had not been delivered. They had complained at Clitheroe Sorting Office and been told that a for mal investigation involving a postal worker was under way. However, when we contacted the Royal Mail,

a spokesman would not confirm or deny that report, adding that anyone who had a complaint or inquiries about their mail should contact Royal Mail customer services on 08457 740740 where staff would do their best to help.

16,000 visit our website

A BIZARRE story of Clitheroe Explorer Scouts tackling some “Extreme Ironing” has gener ated international interest. Pictured above, the Scouts,

aged 14 to 18, ironed out the creases while paddling down the River Ribble in canoes. When we put the story on our website (www.clitheroeadver- tiser.co.uk) it was picked up by an internationally-known American-based website (www.fark.com) which spe cialises in unusual, quirky or downright bizarre stories from around the world. Rather than featuring the

stories in full, it gives a one-line summary of each story with a

link to the home website where it can be viewed. That means hundreds of thousands of Inter net surfers who regularly visit the Fark website can simply click a mouse and be directed to our website. As we went to press - and

just 24 hours after it appeared on www.fark.com - more than 16,000 people had visited our website to read the extreme ironing story and see our local Scouts in action! To read the story yourself,

turn to page 2, or visit our new and improved website at www.clitheroeadvertiser.co.uk to see how much more it has to offer.
