A FAMILY business which has become an institution in farming circles is changing hands. Lindley Pate (Gisburn) Lim

ited has been one of the area's leading agricultural merchants since 1912. Renowned as a “one-stop shop” for farmers, it has also become a major distri bution outlet for Williams trailers. The new man at the helm is

entrepreneur David Sunder land, owner of the thriving Gateway Auctions Ltd, which operates next to the Lindley Pate site, just off the A59. Mr Sunderland (28), set up

Gateway five years ago as con tractors’ plant auctioneers and hopes the rapid growth in that business can be transferred to his new venture. Gateway Auctions has a cus

tomer base covering Ireland, Spain, Finland and Dubai. Mr Sunderland said: “I am

very excited about the buy-out and can assure all of Pate’s cus tomers that we will intend to operate the business as it has been for 95 years." The son of retired architect

Mr David Sunderland and his wife, Christine, of Stonyhurst, the former Longridge High School pupil has lived in the

Ribble Valley all his life. The management team

plans a number of improve ments, including “freshening up” the premises, increasing the yard areas by 50%, creat ing a new access road, improv ing the show room and trade counter, making a new entrance to the premises and a dedicated trailer sales area. A website will allow customers to buy online. Lee Ashton has been

appointed as a group opera tions director. He will look after the day-to-day running of the business and will progress into a sales role within the trailer sales side for the busi ness. The Pate brothers’ family

has owned the business since it was established in 1912. The Pate family issued their

own statement, saying: “The directors of Lindley Pate (Gis burn) Ltd would like to thank all our customers past and present for their loyalty and support. “We sincerely hope that you

will continue to support Mr Sunderland, who will take over control of the business upon completion of sale. “The company will retain

almost all the same experi enced members of staff who have put in many years of loyal service to the business.”

A LARGE crowd of local farm ers and tractor enthusiasts turned out for the retirement farm sale of Mr Edward Wor thington, of Higher Gazegill Farm, Rimington, Clitheroe, conducted by auctioneers Richard Turner and Son. The majority of items

offered for sale were bought- from new and had seen little use in their 35 years at Higher Gazegill. The sale leader was an

almost perfect Ford 4630 trac tor with Howard loader, which sold for £10,700. Aslightly rusty yet mechanically sound Massey Ferguson 390 tractor, achieved £9,700, both tractors being snapped up by local machinery dealerships. Despite several phone bid

ders and spirited bidding, the very original Massey Ferguson 165 tractor, in ex-farm condi tion, sold for £6,500 to collec tor and farmer Mr John Peel, of Newsholme. The vintage Massey Fergu

son 35 tractor with poor tin work, just towed off on the morning of the sale after stand ing in a barn for more than five years, achieved £1,500. The buyer was Mr Alan Wade, of Cononley, near Skipton.

Tractors under hammer Gary Entwistle, of Garic

Plant, Ramsbottom, a keen collector of vintage and classic tractors, bid £900 for the very unusual Nuffield Universal 4 tractor, which was purchased from new, without hydraulic arms and complete with BMC owner’s club badge. The Massey Harris baler with a petrol TVO engine mounted on the drawbasold for £400 to a collector from Grange-over- Sands. The more modern machinery

achieved premium prices. These included a West Mac RP12 Big Baler at £2,900; the Massey Ferguson 124 hay baler at £2,250; a PZ 300 hay bob at £1,300; a Frazer single axle trailer in good condition at £2,250 and a Michael Bunton tipping trailer at £2,250. The star attraction was a

superb hand-carved stone trough, which sold for £2,500 to an undisclosed local business man. Auctioneers Richard Turner

and Son’s next farm dispersal sale will be a t 1-30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10th, when trac tors and machinery of Mr Frank Brown, of Marylebone Farm, West Bradford, will go under the hammer.
