RIBBLESDALE Wan derers professional Joe Scuderi led the local bat ting averages this season in the Ribblesdale Cricket League, having amassed 883 runs from 19 innings for his average of 63.1. The Church Meadow
paid man finished unde feated five times and his highest knock was an undefeated effort of 111. Next best out of the tour

Dream is realised!
RALLYING brothers Jason and Dominic McTear are up and run ning, ready to realise a dream by taking part in next month’s Tour of Mull Rally. The Clitheroe and District Motor
Club members have regularly made the trip to Scotland over the last 18 years as both spectators and mar shalls but this will be the first time the pair have taken part. As thanks to local motor sport
legend John Morton, the pair have had a car custom built for the endurance race by the Sawley ralli- er after a discussion over a pint at
; last year’s race led to John asking why the brother’s hadn’t ever com peted. Their 205 GTI 1900 Skip Brown
car has just been completed, and although they haven’t had time to test it properly, they feel .very fortu nate to have been given this privi lege. Jason, who will be directing his
driver brother Dominic around the track, said: “We’ve ran out of time in the last few weeks, the car’s fin
ished but we’re not going to be able to give it a full shake down. “We’ll be going their blind so to
speak, we’ll have a bit of a tarmac test and then we’re off. We’re very lucky to get an entry in this presti gious event.” The race, which was the first
closed road rally to take place on UK mainland after race organiser Brian Molyneux successfully saw an act passed through parliament in 1990, has been in existence since 1968 and gets undenvay on Friday, October 12th. The Tour of Mull started as a one
night event before adding forest stages on a Saturday afternoon, but since 1980 the event has run sections through Friday night, Saturday afternoon and evening to make it one of the most testing races in the country. Jason added: “We’ll race through
the night into the early hours of Saturday, have a few hours off, race throughout the day and then through the night to five or six Sun- daymoming.
“It really doesn’t matter how well
you know the race as the surface and weather conditions constantly change. There is no room for error. “We plan to get through Friday
first, as 40 to 50 cars often don’t make it through the night, and we’ll see where we stand Saturday whether we can push on a bit.” The 36-year-old painting techni
cian used to drive before swapping seats to become younger brother Dominic’s navigator. The pair have raced road rallies together but it is their first time in such a big event. Jason and Honda mechanic
Dominic would like to thank John Morton, his wife Christine, and Neville Crossley for building the car and offering to transport it to the race for them. As well as give special mention to
Jimmy Smith at Kendal Street Motors, Clitheroe, Syke Speed Ral lying, Tosside, and sponsors Cre ation by Lisa hairdressers, Leon Greenwood Building Contractor, the Kings Arms, M and P Signs, P.B. Builders and Woodstoc Gyms.
Festival is a major success
CLITHEROE CC signed off the season with a well- attended Community Cricket Festival at Chat- bum Road on Saturday. Sponsored by Castle
Cement, 108 children took part across three age groups, with six children in each team. All the young players
got a chance to bat and bowl, and the teams were named after international and county sides. The youngest group,
aged tour to seven years, saw the Australian team come top of the sue teams taking part. The 7 to 11s age group
was won by Sussex, as they beat off seven other teams in their competition. And the oldest group,
the 11 to 13s, saw South Africa win the final, with the last ball of the game going for six runs. Event co-ordinator
man Thomas Odoyo fol lows him in the club’s table with 37.9 as he hit 379 runs in his 11 innings. Alistair Marsh enjoyed
a profitable campaign' with the bat at at Ribbles dale Wanderers,'with an average of 29.3 thanks to 585 runs from 21 innings. Whalley’s top batsman
was Neil Cordingley with 706 runs from 21 innings for his average of 44.1. And not far behind was
Station Road Sri Lankan paid man Bradman Ediri- weera with an average of 44, scoring 924 runs from 23 knocks. Clitheroe’s top batsman
was paid man Michael Papps with 875 runs from 21 innings for an average of 43.8. But the Chatbum Road
pro didn’t hit the highest score at the club this sea son, as former captain Neil Bolton’s 106 not out on the final day topped the list. He scored 535 runs from 18 innings for his 50.6 average. In the bowling averages,
Whalley’s David O’Neill took 52 wickets for 739 runs for an average of 14.2, with Ediriweera was next best at the club (17.5). Stephen Kerr topped
the bowling for Ribbles dale Wanderers with 16.6, to put Scuderi second with 17.8.
Frank Barden averaged
17.2 to top the Read bowl ing, with 26 wickets for 446 runs. Clitheroe’s Josh Mar-
quet was second best local with his average of 15.7. The Aussie took 62
wickets for 973 runs, claiming 56 maidens from 281.2 overs. And Mark Hargreaves
was next best at the club with an average of 17, reaping 50 wickets from 848 runs.

Whalley’s sterling job
WHALLEY thirds have done a sterling job of introducing youngsters to senior cricket this season. In the team’s first competitive year,
they finished second in the Ribblesdale League Third Di-vision. This experience stands the youngsters
in good stead, and highlights the progress being made at Station Road. Whalley’s season cohcluded with an
eight-wicket -win over Baxenden at Sta tion Road. The locals dismissed Baxenden for 76,
with veteran Lee Burgess taking 4-20, and 13-year-old leg-spinner Patrick Brown marked his senior debut by taking a wick et with his very first ball, finishing with 3-
2 off 2.2 overs, aided by a smart stumping from another 13-year-old, Gary Barker. In reply, Whalley’s Declan Fitzhenry
wasted no time with 50 from 45 balls, before hitting a mammoth six, and, unfor tunately, his wicket in the process. Ian (jrace was undefeated on 23. Saturday sees the curtains drawn on a
fine all-round season at Station Road, despite the poor weather, when the jun ior presentation night takes place follow ing a Has Beens verses Could Be’s game, with the youngsters getting a chance to shine against their parents. Proceedings commence at 2 p.m., with
a disco and barbeque to follow with everyone welcome.
Chatburn promoted despite defeat

Farouk Hussain would like to thank Castle Cement for their sponsorship, with out which the day would not have been possible. Every child received a medal and a T-shirt with

trophies awarded to the winners. Hussain said: “It was a
fantastic day that ended in near darkness at 8 p.m. with the Under 13s final, and the fact that the final
m
ball went for a six runs proved a perfect end to the day. “Thirty helpers gave
their time on the day, and it’s thanks to them that it was a success.”
DESPITE a 30-run defeat in the last game of the sea son against champions Haworth West End, Chat- burn seconds have been promoted to the Craven League Fourth Division in third place. Haworth batted first
and scored 189. Chris Mulhearn was the most successful bowler with 4- 68. The other wicket takers
were Henry Kay (2-35), Dave Musson (1-27) and Ben Frankland (1-16). In reply, an excellent
ey FC a
opening partnership of 83 between John Moore (31), and Rob Devine (54) paved the way for -victory. However, wickets fell on
a regular basis and Chat- burn were bowled out for 159. Kay (18) and Geoff
Lambert (13 not out) were the only other batters to get in to double figures. A Richard Shoveltpn
century saw Chatburn’s first team to a 92-run vic tory over Airedale on the final day of the season. The Second Division
o
game saw the side post 186-9, thanks to further runs from Andrew Booth (31), opener Mark Braith waite (11), Neil Cartledge (10) and Chris Wadding- ton (13). Shovelton scored 14
boundaries and four sixes in his undefeated knock to cap the season. In reply, Airedale fell for,
94 all out, thanks to four wickets apiece for Booth (4-37) and Waddington (4-48) to see the side finish fourth in the table.
