Best feet forward is the message

PARENTS across Lan cashire are being encouraged to walk their children to school as part of Interna tional walk to School Month next month. Lancashire County Council is

appealing for those who travel short distances taking their chil dren to school to try walking next month. Eighty-nine Lancashire

schools have signed up for the month and will be receiving packs from the county council full of resources to promote walking to school. The theme of this year’s event"

is for children to be a part of their local community and respect th e ir environment, rather than become "goldfish children" - separated from the real world by car windows. Dorothy Crane, policy devel

opment officer a t Lancashire County Council, said: “Walk to School Month is a good oppor tunity for everyone to make a real effort to choose walking as opposed to being brought to school by car. “The school journey is a great

way to build regular exercise into our daily routine. “We can enjoy the health and

social benefits of walking and at the same time be kind to the

environment. Recent research has shown th a t children are more restricted in their free doms than ever before, and this is having a detrimental effect on the children's sense of place and understanding of their local community. “You can use th e walk to

school so that your children can get to know your neighbours and interact with others. “I t is a great opportunity to

teach them to respect their streets, for example not to cause litter, as well as familiarising them with the journey so that they will be able to travel alone when they are older. They can also practise important life skills such as crossing the road safely, using local shops or posting let ters.” Pupils in 50 countries around

the world will be celebrating the benefits of Walking to School in October. This includes 74 pri mary schools from across Lan cashire who are participating in the event. It is held for a month due to different school holidays around the globe and to increase the chance of people getting into an established walking habit. For more information about

walking to school in Lancashire, contact the School Travel Plan Team on 01772 530700 or visit www.lancashireroadsafety.co.uk

A special thanks to unsung heroes

UNSUNG heroes of the Rib- ble Valley took a break from their usual duties to enjoy a well deserved cup of coffee. A 20-strong group of carers

and staff from Carers Link gathered in the Ribble Valley Borough Council chamber with borough Mayor Coun. Doreen Taylor to enjoy a cof fee morning. The visitors were given a

tour of the Mayor’s Parlour before being invited to have coffee and biscuits with Coun. Taylor herself. This was followed by a dis

cussion on the role of carers in society and the importance of raising awareness of the role of Carers Link. Coun. Taylor was interest

ed to.hear the personal stories of the carers and shared her own experiences as a volunteer for Sure Start. She was concerned that car

ers in the more remote parts of the Ribble Valley could become socially isolated and praised the work of Carers Link in trying to reach these communities. Clare Root, manager of

Carers.Link for Hyndburn and the. Ribble Valley, thanked Coun. Taylor for her interest and her continued support.. She added: “We need more
