taking part in a personal version of the quiz. I have been a senior journalist for the
past 10 years, and have a tota l of 12 years’ experience in news reporting. I have always upheld the belief that as
reporters we are here to report fact - not offer comment unless given the opportu nity to do so through a column such as this. Throughout my career I have endeav
oured to uphold this principle while it seems some others in my profession have tended towards opinion and comment. Take the situation surrounding young
Madeleine McCann. I, like many hundreds of thousands of
others, have tuned into bulletins on radio and television waiting to hear news of the breakthrough and resolution we all want. But, what has really got my goat is the

by Natalie Cox As with the pundits on “Fighting
Talk”, I have found myself wanting to defend the Portuguese police who have at times found themselves the “indefensible” subject of concerns raised by some aspects of the media. In this country we are too quick to
judge others by our own standards. We too often show little disregard for
the way others work and the constraints which they face. I am no expert on Portuguese law, but
we are told there are viable and legal rea sons why little information about the investigation is being released and I accept that fact. If this incident had happened in our
country, undoubtedly things would have been done differently. But the fact remains it didn’t and as
such we have to respect the way the inquiry is being handled, I think the con demnation is unjust. Let the authorities pursue their inquiry - they are the experts, we are not. Over the days since Madeleine’s disap
pearance I have tried to put myself in her parents’ shoes. I simply cannot.

SEVERAL interesting facts and figures were published about Lane Ends School in Grindleton. The school’s records showed that during the previous year the percent age of average attendance was 98.1. In all, 10 pupils were recorded as not
being absent at all during the year. A longer unbroken attendance record was held by Walter Waddington, who for three years had never been absent or late, even though he had to walk for more than a mile, often in rough storms and thick snow. ® A man and his wife were each fined
almost three shillings for being drunk and disorderly in Wellgate, Clitheroe. The mill hands from Back Salford, Clitheroe, were described as being extremely drunk and using “filthy” language.

CIVIC leaders, church dignitaries and youth leaders from all parts of the North were welcomd by the Chief Guide, Lady Baden-Powell at Waddow Hall on. The visit was to mark the centenary of
the birth of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Scout and Guide movement. ® May Queens and their retinues from
10 Roman Catholic churches in East Lan cashire, took part in the annual May Queen procession and festivities at the Church of English Martyrs, Whalley, on Sunday. The heavy rain earlier cleared and the procession round the abbey grounds took place in bright sunshine. ® For the second time in three years,

missing girl and I cannot even begin to imagine what her parents are going through. As someone else said on the radio - I
haven’t got the room in my head to com prehend it. What I have admired though is the
enormous courage and dignity shown by all members of the McCann family, their unwavering belief in a positive outcome, the strength they get from their faith and their defence of the authorities who are trying to locate their little girl. I cannot criticise the circumstances in
which these events occurred. As a mother of two I have looked back
on actions I have taken which, in very dif ferent circumstances, could potentially have had devastating consequences. I have left my babies asleep in my car
on the drive while I went into the house, nipping out to check on them periodical ly; as well as those heart stopping moments when I have looked up and my child has wandered out of view and can not immediately be spotted. The McCanns did nothing more than
most parents have done. Like all parents, they were doing what they thought best at the time. On Sunday morning the children of our
church particularly wanted us to pray for Madeleine and her family with the hope that they will soon be reunited. This is, I am sure, the hope of us all.

TWO Ribble Valley seamen were among the survivors of the Argentinian attack on the destroyer HMS Coventry - the fourth Royal Navy ship to be lost during the Falkland Islands conflict. Cook David Tyson (20), of Chatburn Road, Clitheroe, and leading weapons electronic mechanic Jimmy Mason (22), a former pupil of Ribblesdale School, were picked up by other ships and were reported to be safe and well. They were on their way to Ascension Island and were expected home within the next few weeks. ® Clitheroe PC Geoff Allen just could

now Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans has been officially recog nised for it. He was named “Business
H
Friendly MP/MEP of 2007” in a Westminster ceremony organ ised by the Forum of Private Business (FPB). It asked its 25,000 members to nominate those politicians they believe have fought on their behalf. A shortlist of seven nominees was drawn up, including Mr Evans, who went on to win the annual award outright in only its sec ond year. Mr Evans, who owns a con
venience store in Swansea founded by his grandfather, said: “I was honoured and
E has long fought for the interests of Britain’s smaller businesses and
delighted to accept this award from my peers involved in smaller businesses. It is impor tant that our voice continues to be heard as we are an integral part of the business community. “It is important that we cut
through red tape and needless bureaucracy. We should look again at business taxation. Small businesses should be allowed to reinvest their profits and not be clobbered by tax. “The Forum of Private Busi
ness is a great organisation which fights for the fair treat ment of private businesses and does a huge amount to make politicians aware of the prob lems that business owners face, so it means a great deal to be recognised by their members.”
