of partnership funding, adjustments have had to be made to fares to enable the current Sunday service levels to continue. A simplification of the fares avail able on this route has also taken place

resulting in the withdrawal of Cheap Evening Return fares. However, DUO tickets, which offer

one return ticket plus a second for half-price, are now available for all journeys except those wholly within the GMPTE area (Bromley Cross to Manchester inclusive). These changes will come into effect from Sunday. Steve Butcher, Northern Rail’s

area director, said: “I t’s great news for passengers that the current Sun

day service levels on the Clitheroe to Manchester line can be continued. However, some fares will see a mod erate increase to allow us to continue these services, which might otherwise have been withdrawn." Richard Watts, partnership secre

tary for the Clitheroe Line Commu nity Rail Partnership (CLCRP), commented: “This is good news for users of the Manchester to Clitheroe line that a solution to the future funding for the hourly year round

Sunday service has now been found. The Partnership has worked hard with Northern Rail to find a solution and it is thanks to the designation of the line as a Community Rail service that it has been possible to find this innovative solution. Without this there had been a real prospect that the Sunday sendee would have been withdrawn in June. The CLCRP will continue to look at ways to improve the marketing of the sendee especial ly in the off peak.”

Women will not be forgotten

A SPECIAL candle is on sale to raise funds to train midwives in Africa where a woman dies every minute in childbirth. Made at MELT, Backridge Farm,

Waddington, every eight candles sold will fund the training of a midwife in Africa where there are very few' skilled childbirth attendants. Sheena Byrom, of Whalley, who works

as a consultant midwife for East Lan cashire Hospitals NHS Trust and also for the University of Central Lancashire, asked the owners of MELT if they would donate a candle to the cause. At UCLAN, Sheila works with Tina

Lavendar, a Professor of Midwifery, who is involved in the White Ribbon Alliance and works closely with midwives from Tanza nia, regularly visiting them to offer sup port.

Sheena said: “The candles are decorat

ed with a beautiful beaded white ribbon, that is made by local women in Tanzania and the labels, which state that the candle is dedicated to all the women that die, have been designed and printed free of charge by Ginger Pumpkin, another local Clitheroe company.” The candles, which cost £12, are avail

able from Melt and from Sheena by email ing her on sheenabyrom@mac.com For more information about the White

Ribbon Alliance log on to the charity’s website at www.whiteribbonalliance.org Our picture shows staff from MELT,
