three-door BMW 1 Series. The new model range features the most fuel efficient production vehicle BMW has ever produced. Technologies such as brake energy
regeneration, automatic start-stop function and electric power steering are combined with lower rolling resist ant tyres and a gearshift change indi cator to encourage economical motor ing. These innovations are in addition to the use of variable valve technolo gies and high-precision direct injec tion engines on some 1 Series models that boost power output but cut fuel consumption and emissions. Brake energy regeneration (iGR)

At a glance, sporting lines and an ergonomically designed interior hint at the athletic qualities of the new BMW 1 Series 3-door. Responsive acceleration and precise handling reveal its unique character. Powerful yet lightweight engines, combined with innovative energy management systems, generate optimum performance whilst lowering fuel consumption and emissions.

makes its debut on the 1 Series. The system uses an Intelligent Alternator Control (IAC) and an absorbent glass mat battery to recycle previously lost energy, in turn saving fuel. Addition ally, the energy generated by the engine on over-run (under braking or descending a hill) was previously wasted. Now this lost energy is utilised by the IAC to charge the bat tery. iGR alone is responsible for a 3% improvement in fuel economy. The new 1 Series comes with Auto
matic Start-Stop function to cut fuel consumption. Standard on all manual transmis
sion models (except 130i), the system automatically switches the engine off when the vehicle is stationary and the driver puts the car into neutral. To restart, the driver only need engage the clutch again before pulling away in the normal manner. Should he not want to use the automatic Start-Stop, function it can be manually switched off.

there is still 200 litres of boot space. In a more conventional five-seat configu ration, the X5’s boot measures 620- litres, up 155 litres on its predecessor. There is also an additional 90-litre storage compartment under the floor if you are not interested in having seven-seat capacity. This X5 is also 6cm wider than its forebear. One of the tricks behind this X5’s
excellent luggage space is the fact that it carries no spare, instead being fitted with run-flat tyres. These tyres allow a driver to continue a journey in the event of a puncture for up to 90 miles at speeds of 50 m.p.h.
Behind The Wheel As a BMW you would expect the X5 to display that trademark fine bal-
HE new BMW X5 is only 19cm longer than the old model, but it manages to incor
ance and handling finesse. Such expec tations are tempered somewhat when you clap eyes on the thing and appre ciate how big it actually is, but get behind the wheel and the X5 appears to shrink around you, feeling nimble and composed even when hurried along. Big SUVs just do not get any better than this to drive.
Value For Money You are looking at £36,775 for the
X5 3.0i or around £500 more for the 3.0d model I tried. The standard 4.4- litre V8 nudges the £50,000 barrier and the range-topping 4.8-litre V8 cosies up to the £60,000 price point. Run the smaller V8 and you will be lucky to see 20 m.p.g. under normal conditions, hut the diesel’s total of over 30 m.p.g. is more manageable.
Could I live with one? The X5 feels a highly polished prod uct that is perfectly suited to the on-
road 4x4 role. The only serious criti cism is its lack of off-road ability, but it will handle a muddy track with the best of them and then outperform the best of them when it gets back on home turf - i.e. tarmac. The interior is simple in design and constructed to the highest standards, while the seven- seat option brings an added dimension in versatility. Running the X5 over an extended
period, it is easy to see why large 4x4s are so popular with families. The advanced 4x4 system might be a white elephant most of the time, but it does bring extra security in damp or snowy conditions, and otherwise the X5 manages to do a lot of what an MPV does without looking like an MPV. It is supremely comfortable on the
motorway and offers levels of compo sure on poorly surfaced B-roads that belie its size. Once again, it is hard not to be impressed with BMW’s engi neering know-how.

Be the first to see the new three-door BMW1 series... T
HIS weekend a t Bowker BMW, you are invited to be among the first to see the new
results in a 90% energy saving com pared to a conventional mechanical hydraulic steering system. Power assistance is now provided
by an electric motor that works only when required, such as turning a cor ner.
Other fuel saving enhancements
have been made, courtesy of various ancillary devices, such as the air-con ditioning power supply being discon nected from the drivetrain when not in use. Even flaps behind the kidney grille improve economy, closing up for improved aerodynamic efficiency should the engine require less airflow. The feature also improves cold start ing times. Bowker BMW’s general sales man
ager, Chris Eccles, comments: “The new technology showcased in the BMW 1 Series will have a significant impact on cost of ownership for cus tomers. For the company car driver all but two engine variants now sit in the Band C category for Vehicle Excise Duty. This results in a saving of up to £505 for someone paying •10% tax and up to £278 for those in the 22% tax bracket. For all owners, fuel consumption improvement means a 12,000 miles-a-year driver will save approximately £250 off the fuel bill.” All BMW 1 Series models come
with dynamic stability control witli dynamic traction control for the best combination driving pleasure and safety. DSC allows drivers to make the most of the 1 Series’s 50:50 weight distribution and rear-wheel-drive con figuration for the best on-road per formance. All BMW 1 Series have six airbags
as standard, the Brake Force Display function on the rear lights to highlight sharp braking and Run-flat tyres with

tyre puncture warning system. To herald the introduction of the
latest generation of engines, BMW's designers have refreshed the interior and exterior styling of the five-door model. The 1 Series now features a larger kidney grille for improved air flow to the engine. The lower front spoiler has also been reprofiied to cre ate a larger air intake, while the spoil er protrudes further for a more pro nounced, sporting look. The head lamp cluster remains the same size but a darker cover gives a subtle, more distinguished front end. At the rear, a restyled bumper gives
the impression of a wider, lower car. The rear lamp cluster now features a new arrangement of lights, but retains its original shape. The new three-door 1 Series fea
tures the same styling cues, but its side view is, naturally, different. The passenger doors are longer than those on the five-door model and are also frameless in the style of a coupe. Inside, customers will also be able
to choose between either a four-seat or a five-seat configuration. In the four- seat arrangement, rear passengers are separated by a central storage com partment and sit in more sculptured seats. As a no-cost option, the five- seat layout offers the traditional bench seat standard on the five-door 1 Series. The introduction of higher quality materials and minor changes to the layout of the interior enhance customer comfort and practicality. See this new model for yourself at
Bowker BMW this weekend from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday. For more information or to book a test drive, call 01254 274444 or v is it www.

Mazda2, park them end-to-end and they’li stretch for 1,000 miles. Mazda sold this many 2s from
2003 to 2007, but lor a company that usually takes a big slice of the small car pie, the UK did not account for too many of those sales.
The replacement model has to
do a whole lot better. Thankfully, Mazda has equipped it to suc ceed. Two engines are offered to
0
begin with and they are petrol units of either 1.3-litre or 1.5-Iitre capacity, but Mazda dealers will take orders for the 1.4-litre diesel that will follow hot on the heels of these launch power plants. Both petrol engines feature
t - L
variable valve timing on the exhaust system, while the more powerful 1.5-litre lump also gets a variable induction system to broaden and strengthen torque delivery across the board. Expect 74 b.h.p. from the entry-level petrol and 102 b.h.p. from the larger capacity unit. As with most vehicles this size,
Mazda’s engineers have optimised ride and handling for the demands of urban roads. At the front, there is the tradi
tional V-shaped Mazda grille and the headlights are very deftly smeared into the front bumper assembly. Likewise, the tail lights are neatly integrated into the tail gate, which from a practical per spective does not have the widest aperture as a result. Still, when budget small cars
like the Proton Satria Neo now look as good as they do, the expec tation for a company such as Mazda is cranked ever higher. The interior features a number
of welcome design touches such as a glove box with integrated maga zine rack. There is also a floor
Mazda 2 mark 2 B
Y most measures, 410,000 is a lot of cars. Even when they are as small as the old
console between the front seats with a large rear tray affixed. In total, there is 250 litres of storage space, which is not half had for a supermini. Silver on black detail ing on the fascia gives a rather more grown up look and feel than many key rivals. Although hot hatch fans will lie
disappointed to hear that there is no tyre-shredding MPS model to go toe to toe with the likes of the Vauxhall Corsa VXR and Renaultsport Clio 197, for those looking for a more sedate pedal there is a lot to offer. Equipment levels have always been a Mazda strength and the 2 specification list shows that many versions have standard air-conditioning and MP3 player compatibility. Safety has not been skimped
on, and front, side and curtain airbags as well as traction and sta bility control systems are offered.
