Jonnie lands gold
medal By Adrian Capstick
JONNIE Schofield stormed to a gold medal at the Euro pean Wild Water Champi onships in Bihac, Bosnia on Saturday - Great Britain's first International Wild Water Racing Champi onship medal since 1995. This victory demon
strates the 22-year-old's ability to consistently come out on top in the K1 (kayak single) sprint event. The Sawley paddler post
ed the two fastest times of the competition and won by nearly two seconds in the event, which combines the speed of flatwater racing with the technical aspects of slalom racing. Schofield recently
switched from Wild Water Racing to the Olympic dis cipline of flat water racing, achieving an impressive sev enth place in the men's K2 500m (kayak double) event. But has shown he can
still produce the goods on his own. Schofield was not the
only one of the Great Britain team to medal as Jessica Oughton won bronze in the K1 (kayak single) women's sprint event.

Red Rose golds for Valley stars
By Adrian Capstick
THIRTEEN-year-old Oliver Aspden has been selected for the Lan cashire Schools’ Athletics team for next month’s Regional Championships in Stoke. Participating in the
Under 15 Pentathlon, the Bowland High School pupil's main event is 80m hurdles, which he won at the Lancashire AA Champi onships in Blackpool. The Blackburn Harriers
athlete, who lives in Clitheroe, will also compete in the high jump and long jump to complete the com bined event. Oliver only started ath
letics 18 months ago, but due to undertaking winter training this season he has got off to a good start in a new age group he has anoth er year to progress in. And he will be aiming for
another medal this weekend when he competes in the Northern Regional Event on Saturday. Also in Blackpool, both
Robbie Schofield and Lau ren Westwell earned double middle distance gold as Rib- ble Valley Athletics Club did themselves proud. The championships,
which are run over two days, are one of the hardest- fought in the country, but the Valley team brought
Robbie Schofield on (he podium
home an impressive medal haul. Robbie got the ball
rolling in the final of the Under 171,500m. In a tactically run race,
Robbie waited for the right moment to kick away from the field, unleashing a final lap sprint of 56.9 seconds to win by over five seconds. In the Under 13 Girls’
1,500m final, Lauren and Ellen Duke, in their first season on the track, also showed great promise. Ellen led from the gun
and did not let up with a fast pace, with Lauren, fol lowing in fifth. At the bell, Ellen made
her break for the line, with Lauren taking closer order, and down the home straight Ellen was over taken by two
other girls, with Lauren going into third, before pushing even harder and crossing the line in first place to take the gold. Ellen came in fourth, missing out on the bronze by one second. The following day, Lau
ren made her break with 100 metres to go to win the 800m, and Robbie ran away from the field with 400m to go to win the 800m in a national standard time, with clubmate Joe Basquill kicking hard to take silver. In the Under 20 400m,
Ashleigh Williams ran a near perfect race, but she just missed out on the gold, although her time of 59.4 seconds was a big personal best. Nathan Riding came
Oliver Aspdcn (T220507/6)
home third in the Under 20 1,500m, emphasising his potential to be one of the best in the country. He will be attending
Birmingham University in September and will hope to improve on his early form. Sam Yates, in the Under
15 Boys’ 1,500m, showed great maturity to hang on for the bronze medal, smashing his personal best. Leigh Lennon, one of the
county’s leading female 800m runners, went down a distance to compete in the 300m against more estab lished sprinters, and ran a great race to finish second in a personal best time of 41.6 seconds. Joe Basquill also took sil
ver in the Under 17 400m final, again in a personal best time of 52.1 seconds. On Sunday, Ashleigh
Williams ran a great race in the Under 20 final, gaining a well-earned silver medal. Joe Oldfield added
bronze in the Under 13 Boys’ 800m, running a per sonal best time. Leigh Lennon won gold in
the final 800m of the day, moving away with 350 metres to go, and finishing almost five seconds clear in a time of 2 minutes 13.70 seconds, taking her to fourth in the national rank ings.
Leigh has hopes of com
peting in Serbia at the World Youth Games for Great Britain. Other athletes who set
personal bests were Hayley Huntoon in the Under 15 Girls’ 800m, Tess Parkinson in the Under 15 Girls’ 300m, Elliot Bailey in the Under 15 Boys’ 1,500m and Luke Watson in the Under 17 Men’s 800m. The club are actively
recruiting young athletes, and anyone interested can contact membership direc tor Daniella (01254 871121).

Aussie Josh is cricket giant!
JOSH Marquet proved he is still the leading pace bowler in the Ribblesdale League as he took 7-34 off 15 overs in a scintillating win for Clitheroe at Great Har wood. Whoever won the toss
was going to insert their opponents on what looked a very damp pitch that most definitely would suit the first team to bowl. But the locals took the
game by 43 runs in the end. largely thanks to the big Aussie's efforts. Great Harwood won the
toss and gleefully stuck Clitheroe in to have first knock. Batting was, as predict
ed, hard work, as the ball kept low, and then every so often would rear off a good length and cause the batters problems. Stuart Maher produced
the first wicket as a straight ball kept low and trapped Peter Dibb lbw bang in front. However, Chatburn Road
professional Michael Papps was slowly attempting to build an innings at the other end, which was proving dif ficult. Neil Bolton joined him, and they steadied the ship and took the score along to 40, before Bolton turned sharply for a second run and pulled a calf mus-
