Top man in town

ONE of Ireland’s top singer-songwriters, Mick Hanly, will play an intimate gig at Waddington Sports and Social Club next Friday. Hanly, pictured, is probably best known

as the former front man of “Moving Hearts”, taking over in 1981 when Christy Moore left. In Ireland he enjoys almost legendary

status for his ability to write moving songs which depict a whole range of human emo tions, such as “Without The Fanfare” or “The Writing on the Wall”. Back in the early '90s, Hal Ketchum’s

cover version of Hanly’s song “Past the Point of Rescue” reached No. 2 in the American Country Music Charts. Mick is no one-hit wonder though, with

many auspicious artists such as Mary Black, Francis Black, Delores Keane and

even Daniel O'Donnell covering his materi al.

Now he is embarking on a UK tour of

intimate venues, with Waddington chosen as his Lancashire show. I t will also be recorded and featured on “The Drift with Phil Brown”, on BBC Radio Lancashire. Phil agreed to “come out of retirement” as a promoter to organise the Waddington gig, such is his admiration for Mick Hanly. Special guests on the evening are

Clitheroe-based Laurie and Caro! Harri son, a highly talented local contemporary acoustic duo. The gig s tarts a t 8 p.m. and tickets,

priced £10 and £8 concessions, are avail able on the door or in advance from Clitheroe Tourist Information Centre (Tel. 01200 425566). For more on Mick Hanly, visit his website (www.mickhaniy.com).

Log on and win Take That tickets!
