SENIOE speakers from a Val ley school have secured a place in a regional final. A trio representing Clilheroe

Royal Grammar School were judged best overall in the Rotary North West District Youth Speaks conle.st. Their efforts earned team mem

bers a place in the Northern final, which will lake place later this month in Northwich. Success

there will take the team into the UK final in April.

Emma Coffey, Richard Yates

and Stephen Tozer were not only judged best overall in the compe tition held in Heversham, but each team member was also judged out standing speaker in their respec tive categories. Altogether eight teams took

part in the Cumbria and Lan cashire competition, having earned the right to compete after winning their regional rounds. O An intermediate team from

CRGS took part in the 11 to 13 category, earning third place. Their speaker Lucy Grime was judged best in the category. Other | team members were Hannah Grif fith, the chairman, and Sarah Livesey, who gave the vote of

j

thanks. Both teams are mentored by Mrs Joanne Mangan, CRGS’ Head of English. Our picture shows, from the left,

Naturalists take trip down Memory Lane

SNAPSHOTS, scrapbooks and slides were shown at the annual members’ night of Clitheroe Natu ralists.

Mrs Christine Pickles, who keeps

the society’s scrapbooks updated, showed slides taken on last year’s summer walks. These ranged from the flooded

and wet Littondale walk to the hot one at Hellifield, with the pictures evoking happy memories of partic ular incidents. Especially admired were the panoramic views across the Yorkshire moors or towards the Lakeland hills. Next Mr Alan Jackson gave an

interesting account of a birdwatch ing tour he made to Florida with his wife. The trip had been inspired

by a talk given by Stuart Meredith, who had spoken about birds of the nibble Estuary and who leads bird- watching holidays across the world. Mr Jackson described the reserves he had visited in Orlando, the Gulf Coast and the Everglades. As Mr Meredith has visited the area 18 times, Mr Jackson said he seemed to be familiar with every swamp and could forecast what wi)s likely to be seen. Studies of New Zealand taken

some years ago were then shown by Mrs Pal Coleman. She had visited Maori villages, enjoyed a tradition al concert and meal cooked on hot stones hosted by the Maori people. She went to sparsely inhabited parts of both North and South

islands seeing hot water springs,

■ geysers and spectacular waterfalls and mountains.

Finally, chairman Frank Mason

showed slides of a birdwatching visit to Sweden, but most slides were taken on a day off from bird watching. He was impressed by the superb feats of engineering | involved in constructing bridges between islands and had striking images of white churches with red roofs, as well as carved and painted church interiors. Botanical gardens and cemeter

ies with immaculate box hedges also featured, along with urban scenes in Malmo, where the size of the stacks of parked bicycles at the bus station were unbelievable.

Embsay walk marks Ramblers’ anniversary

A WALK from Embsay Reservoir was the first undertaken by the walk leader when joining Clitheroe Ramblers in March, 1987. For the group’s most recent

walk, the same 12-mile route, starting at the Yorkshire Water car park above Embsay, was followed to celebrate Clitheroe Ramblers’ anniversary. A short stretch of track led to

the entrance gate of the access area, and after one-and-a-half miles the bridleway from Bolton Abbey to Rylstone was crossed and a tea break was taken in the shelter of a shooting cahin, the

comfort of which members were loathed to leave to face the strong west wind to reach the boundary wall above Rylstone. Turning north, the wall gave

shelter to the walkers as they tra versed Cracoe Pinnacles, passing Rylstone Cross and the war memo rial and obelisk on Watt Crag, the highest point on the route at 1,650ft. Leaving the shelter of the wall

and walking east over the open moor, the group again availed themselves of the comfort of another shooting hut for a lunch stop on Thorpe Moor.

Losing some height in the next 1

half mile. Standard Hill was crossed to reach the dam at Upper Barden Reservoir. Here the empty Water Board house stands sentinel | over the Moors. With a strong wind and rain to

face, the group found the climb- back to join the Bolton Abbey/ Rylstone bridleway a hard grind to reach the top. Heading south to | the intake wall above Eastby, it was then followed for one-and-a - half miles back to the starting point to conclude a walk that was | mostly above 1,200ft. in fairly windy conditions.
