Narrow defeat

\ l

KIBBLE Valley District Under 15s lost narrowly in an enthralling Lan cashire Cup Final against Hyndburn. The locals lost the

toss, were asked to bat first and got off to a good start, until Hopkins was run out for seven. Dewhurst

joined

Knight, and they put on 67 until Dewhurst fell for 27, unfortunately pick ing up a hamstring injury in the process. Clarkson made a solid

25 while Knight was put ting together a marvel lous score. Robinson and Lowes

assisted him, and the Valley side finished on 193-4 off 45 overs, with Knight not out on 98. In Hyndburn’s reply,

Lowes took an early wicket and conceded only sue runs in his open ing five overs,, while Hutchins was unlucky with a catch going down. Clarkson and Coul-

ston were a expensive early on, and the Valley turned to spin through Le-Breton and Hopkins. This slowed the run

rate, with both spinners taking a wicket, Le-Bre- ton only conceding 21 runs off his nine overs. The game; became

a»‘

tense as the run rate crept up to almost seven an over, but Hyndburn had wickets in the tent. This proved to be

vital, as when it came to the last over, they need^ 13 to win and managed to pass the Valley score by one run off the very last ball of the game.

Narrow defeat

RICHARD Shovelton and Steve Bowker saw Chatburn to a 16-run win over Haworth Road. ■With the bat the locals

made 221-8, thanks largely to Shovelton’s 81, and other efforts from opener Mark Braithwaite (25), Neil Cartledge (11), Nick Hutchinson (25) and Andy Lambert (36 not out). Shovelton struck 10 fours and a six off 93

balls. In reply, the Yorkshire

hosts finished short on 205-8 as Bowker (3-34), Rod Booth (2-39) and Shovelton (1-65) took the wickets to halt them in their tracks. ' Meanwhile, Chatbum

seconds had an eight- wicket victory over Skip- ton Cl to maintain third spot in the league. Geoff Lambert, Henry

Kay and Chris Mulheam each took three wickets as Skipton were bowled out for a paltry 34. ■ Chatburn took 5.4

overs to score 38-2 with Mark Holmes (19) and

Rob Devine (12 not out). Martin Davies

weekend. One of four medals picked up by Team

GB in Serbia Montenegro, the pair took their favoured lane next to the grandstand and gave it everything as they hauled their boat over the line in third place behind

Hungary and Latvia. Twenty-two-year old Schofield has only

very recently switched from Wild Water Racing to the Olympic Sprint Racing,

Schofield bagged seventh place in the K2 (Kayak double) 500m event alongside 21- year-old Brown, the former Junior Marathon World Champion. . The pair have dominated over the 500m

distance in the domestic selection regattas in April and June, and this is a great way to end the season for this new crewl Schofield (left) and Brown are pictured,

« n Whalley crash to earth

WHALLEY came back down to earth with a severe reality check when a poor bowling display condemned them to a comprehensive trashing at home to Cherry Tree on Saturday. Defeat saw them plum

met down the table, and any hopes of a Lancashire Cup place diminished - unless they can win their three remaining fixtures in what has been a season of inconsistent performances.

Cherry Tree didn't hang

about, and a splendid open ing partnership set them up as Scott Friend and Ahmer Mirza posted 68 for the first wicket in 12 overs, before the former fell to Mark Fal lon, caught by Whalley paid man Bradman Ediri- weera on the square leg boundary. Hopes must have been

raised for the home side when Declan Fitzhenry had the Tree professional

Zahoor Elahi caught by Martin Davies for just sbe, oft probably the worst ball he has bowled in his short first term career. Ahmer fell for very good

71 off just 87 deliveries, with things just starting to slow down at 113-3. And that soon became

124-4 when Bolton holed out to David O'Neill off Fallon tor six. Mark Hadfield (26) and Nigel Robbins (15) went.

before a real onslaught in the final overs saw Baldwin hit a rapid 42 off 21, and Marc Burrows 15 oft 13, as the innings finally ended on 217- 7 - leaving Whalley a stiff ask in the second innings. A pedestrian start

between Davies and Alex Whelan added 76 for the first wicket to set Whalley up for a sporting chance, but Davies went for 44 and was soon followed by Whe lan tor 29, both run out.

Read enjoy nine-wicket win

READ had little trouble in over powering Barnoldswick on Satur day to record a nine-wicket victory. Frank Barden finished with

superb figures of 5-15 as the visitors went from 7-1 to 8-5 at Whalley Road, recovering to 41-6, before col lapsing to 74 all out. Substitute professional Kaileem

mustered the little resistance Barnoldswick could otter, and he only scored 26 runs before Barden had him caught behind by David Swarbrick for the sixth wicket. Three ducks preceded that wick

et, and but for a final wicket stand of 16 runs that saw Melvyn Parker finish with 12, Barnoldswick were

all out for 76. The only mention of note in the

innings was that Jessica Scothern made her Bamoldswick debut, and she is believed to be the first-ever female cricketer to play in a Rib- blesdale League first team fixture. She faced 30 balls to score a sin

gle run in the final-wicket stand with Parker as the innings came to a close after less than 28 overs. A wicket each was also taken by

Read paid man Hanif Ur Rehman (1-1), Chris Holt (11-1), Chris Astin (25-1) and Elliot Lowes (14-

!)•In reply, the single Read wicket to fall was that of Joe Marshall,

who was caught by Kaileem off the bowling of Sajid Akhtar for 13. Fellow opener Swarbrick (19 not

out) and Rehman (45 not out) did. the rest without much trouble to see the side home in 14.5 overs.' The Read professional struck

three boundaries and four sixes for his knock that came off 32 balls. Next weekend sees the return of

double fixtures as the season draws ever closer to an end. Read are away at Earby on Sat

urday, before entertaining Padiham at Whalley Road on Suiiday, wick ets pitched at 1 p.m.

Frank Barden Ripped apart! Pro hurts locals

JOINT league leaders Baxenden obliterated Ribblesdale Wander ers by seven wiclcets on Saturday to maintain their charge for the

title. The Church Meadow men were

■ripped apart by Stephen Molloy (4-31) and professional Jonathan Fielding (4-17), while wicket keeper Andrew Caunce claimed six victims. Three catches and three stump-

ings were made by Caunce as he had an exceptional day behind the stumps, catching Ribblesdale paid man Joe Scuderi (6), Alistair Marsh (11) and Stephen Kerr (6), and whipping off the bails of Ryan Gladwin (0), Joe Bunyan (1) and John Braithwaite (0). Craig Hall proved Ribblesdale's

top scorer with 24 runs before he became one of Fielding's tour vic tims, but the rest of the order tell

extremely cheaply as the locals were all out tor 60. In reply, Baxenden lost three

early wickets in Callum Wadding- ton (5), David Parkinson (7) and Mark Rishton (0), but former Clitheroe paid man Fielding (37 not out) and Simon Payne (8 not out) had little trouble in attaining such a low target'to take victory. David Howard (1-12) Terry

Braithwaite (1-21) and John Braithwaite (.1-21) all took a wicket apiece. The penultimate weekend of

the Ribblesdale Cricket League season sees a double dose of fix tures. Ribblesdale travel to Great

Harwood on Saturday, and enter tain Earby on Sunday, with wick ets pitched at 1 p.m. on both days.

SPORT IN ASSOCIATION WITH P3 COMPUTERS (l'&-

EDENFIELD professional Babar Naeem proved the difference between defeat and victory for Clitheroe on Saturday, as the man from Pakistan struck a century to consign the locals to a 40-run defeat. The deficit in runs was exactly

the difference between what Clitheroe professional Michael Papps made (60), and that of Naeem. In fact, the Chatburn Road visi

tors contributed much more as a team, compared to one or two siz able efforts from Edenfield. Adam Barnes (59) was next best

with the.bat, followed by double fig ures from Christian Slinger (24), opener Greg Smithson (18) and Brett Storey (16).Papps finally took the wicket of Naeem, bowling him at the 100 mark, while Barnes fell to a catch by Carl Palmer oft

Andrew Pearce, and Slinger fell to a catch by Danny Glover off Josh Marquet. Pearce topped the bowling fig

ures with 3-29, aided by 2-53 from Papps and 2-66 from Marquet as Edenfield finished 238-7. In reply, apart from Papps’ top

score of 60, double figures came from opener Neil Bolton (15), Peter Dibb (10), Danny Glover (32), Simon Goulter (18), Palmer (18) and Mark Hargreaves (16) as Clitheroe fell short on 198-7. Naeem was also instrumental in

claiming 4-84, \vith the aid of a fur ther 2-73 from William Slinger. This weekend's penultimate fix

tures see Clitheroe entertain Oswaldtwistle Immanuel on Satur day, before travelling to Barnoldswick on Sunday. Wickets are pitched at the earlier time of 1' p.m. on both days.

e v F C a After Ediriweera went for

34 it was the beginning of the end, as yet again the promise within the Whalley line up failed to come up with the required goods. Elahi bowled a good

length and nagging leg-side line and proved difficult to get awajr, resulting in five wickets for Sudnik at the other end. Wickets tumbled rapidly, and Whalley were soon 157 all out after another resounding collapse form the middle order and tail, as the home side failed yet again to chase a total do\vn. So different to the happy

camp that followed last week's success in the Twen- ty20Cup.

Cobras score

easy win

IN their final match of the season, Clitheroe Cobras Under 13s A had a convinc ing victory against Padi ham at The Arbories. Batting first, Clitheroe

made steady, but unspec tacular, progress on a slow

batting surface. Significant contributions

by Houldsworth (18) Parkinson (18) and Banks (16) left Clitheroe with a nett total of 67 oft their 16 overs. In reply, Padiham were

never in a position to threaten the target, due again to some excellent all round bowling from Clitheroe, although their fielding, tor once, fell short of their normal high stan dards and had a distinct end-ot-season look about it. Nuttall

(2-8)

Houldsworth (1-5) and Dent (1-8) were the wicket

takers. Clitheroe now have to

wait for the fixtures of their rivals to be completed thiS week to see if they have managed to secure a cham pionship that has eluded this age group for some time.
