It s war on mobiles!

by Natalie Cox

MOBILE phone drivers in the Valley are being targeted in a month-long zero tolerance cam paign.

, Motorists who flout legislation

by using a mobile phone when driving will be issued with a £60 fixed fine and given three penalty

points. The crackdown comes as a direct

response to concern in the Ribble Valley community that changes to the law are not being enforced. Members of the public have told

police officers that drivers contin ue to use mobile phones despite new legislation. PC Cliff Woodcock, a communi

ty beat manager in Clitheroe, said the operation followed complaints raised at monthly Police and Com munity Together meetings. He said Valley residents had

voiced their concerns about the dangers of using a hand held tele phone while at the wheel.

Support Officers will be targeting roads in Clitheroe, Whalley, Read, Simonstone, L'angho, Wilpshire and Longridge throughout Sep tember. Once offenders have been identi

fied and stopped, immediate action will follow. They will be issued with a £60 fixed penalty notice and three points whether they are talking, texting or taking calls. Said PC Woodcock: “Our prime

target is mobile phone users and we will be operating on selected roads throughout the target areas. “Drivers will be pulled in whether they have finished their

call or not.” He added th a t if necessary

police officers had the power to seize mobiles and “interrogate” sim cards. Added PC Woodcock: “This

operation is about road safety. “Most of the areas we will target

are residential urban areas where drivers are passing junctions, hous- ■ es, businesses and schools poten

tially putting people at risk. “We will be adopting a zero tol erance policy with no second

chances given.” As well as cracking down on

mobile phone drivers, officers are also hoping to disrupt the so-called “travelling criminals” who infil trate the Valley and make sure drivers and passengers are wearing seatbelts and that children are using booster seats where neces

sary. PC Cliff Woodcock said: “Using

a mobile phone while driving has been an offence since 2003 and is clearly unacceptable - not only are they putting their own lives at risk but they are risking the lives of other road users too. “Motorists should be warned

that we will not tolerate this type of behaviour and we will take firm action against anyone found to be doing so.” Our picture shows PC Woodcock
