deal. In fact, you might well quite legitimately think that if you were able to secure any new car for less than £5,000 on the road, then you’d have got a great deal. Should you be in such a position,
needing a new car-on such a tight budget, then you need to know about Hyundai’s Arnica Atlantic. You probably won’t know what a
Hyundai Arnica is, so let’s clear that up to begin with. The Arnica is Hyundai’s take on the citycar market currently populated with products like Peugeot’s 107, Citroen’s Cl, Toy ota’s Aygo, Ford’s Ka and Vauxhall’s Agila. All these cars are supposed to be
significantly cheaper than the slightly larger supermini models they sit just below in their respectrive manufac turer line-ups. The problem is that once you spec them up to an accept able standard, you end up in a posi tion where you might as well have bought something Corsa or Fiesta sized in the first place. Hyundai’s Arnica isn’t quite Corsa
or Fiesta-sized, but it’s not far off. The first generation Arnica did rea sonable business for Hyundai oh these shores but the UK market didn’t ini- tiually get the MK2 model until the UK importers decided to bring in a few in 2006 to test the water. Things have gone quite well for them with this car, hence a standard
range that now offers buyers the choice between 1.1-litre petrol GSi and CDX five-door variants at prices ranging between £6,017 and £6,617. The Atlantc model, at just £4,995)
slots in below these two, including all the equipment features you need and nothing you don’t. To be more specific, your five grand
runs to electric front windows, a dri ver’s airbag, tinted glass, a boot light, central locking, power steering, ABS with Electronic Brake force Distribu tion and a four speaker audio system with CD player. You can’t really argue with this
level of specification given the Arnica’s bargain price point. The safe ty provision also includes seatbelt pre tensioners and 3-point belts in the rear. Plus you get Hyundai’s industry leading warranty package of 5 years unlimited mileage. As with the other Arnica variants, this one has the same 1.1-litre petrol
engine, good for more than 52 miles per gallon on
the.combined cycle, while potentially staying away from the fuel station for over 400 miles. As for the Arnica itself; well it’s cer
tainly not as small as you might be expecting for a car of this class. I t ’s 3,565mm long by 1,525mm wide and there’s also 1,570mm of height which translates to a pleasantly airy cabin. It’s not the most modem citycar on
the market and it lacks the youthful exuberance that manufacturers are so keen to inject their small cars with these days but there’s still much to recommend the Hyundai Arnica. It’s nippy, i t ’s inoffensively-styled and running costs are low. Then there’s the modest prices and
the generous equipment levels to fac tor in. For just £5,000, the Arnica Atlantic makes a lot more sense than the other models in its range and is now a car that citycar buyers on a budget simply have to take seriously.

OW much of a new car can you get for under £5,000? You won’t be expecting a great

diesel version and offers cus tomers an 18-strong model line-up (13 hatchbacks and five saloons), with a choice of six powertrains and four equipment levels. On-the road prices for the
regular Mazda3 range start at £11,430 (Mazda3 1.4 S hatchback) and rise to £17,930 for the range-top- ping Mazda3 2.0D Sport. Meanwhile, the dramatic new-range-topping 260ps Mazda3 MPS ’super-hatch’ with Sports Aero Kit, deliv ering 0-62mph in just 6.1 sec onds, is in showrooms now. All models feature a fresh,
smart image and are avail able in a choice of nine body colours. For a limited period,
Mazda is offering customers a ’great-looking, sporty styling’ Summer Special ver sion of the Mazda3. The Mazda31.6 Tamura is based on the TS model and features additional equipment includ ing: a two-bar front sports grille, sports bumpers, side skirts and rear spoiler, front fog lights, 16 in. alloy wheels and a chrome exhaust trim. On the road, the Mazda3
Tamura costs £13,795 and is available in two free exterior colours, Aurora Blue Mica and Galaxy Grey Mica. The five-door Katano comes with a 105ps petrol engine and a five-speed manual transmis

HE Mazda3 range includes the newly- introduced 143ps
sion and its price represents a significant saving on a simi larly equipped TS model. All models benefit from
Mazda engineers developing new measures to counteract engine and road noise and to significantly improve NVH. Aerodynamic drag reduc tions, together with engine improvements, have resulted in significantly improved fuel consumption and reduced G02 emissions for most mod els, with many vehicles mov ing into a lower Road Fund Licence Band. All six engines (three
petrol and three diesels) now available in the Mazda3 are Euro4 compliant. Customers who prefer petrol can choose from 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0-litre engines. The 1.4-litre 84ps petrol engine and five-speed manual gearbox, returns 42.2mpg on the official Com bined fuel cycle and has C02 emissions of 157g/km in the hatchback. The 1.6-litre 105ps engine with five-speed
manual transmission in both hatchback and saloon forms, returns 40.9mpg and emis sions of 162g/km.
Fitted with the Activemat-
ic four-speed automatic transmission, the 1.6 engine returns 37.2mpg for the saloon and 36.2mpg for the hatchback with C02 emis sions of 179g/km and 183g/km respectively. Elec tronically controlled, Active- matic allows drivers to enjoy fully automatic operation or to sequentially select gears manually.
The range-topping 2.0-litre
150ps engine is available in both hatchback and saloon models with a six speed man ual transmission. In this
