up and running

[Iitrsl Green................2 Rirninglon ..................0

THE champions finally got their season up and running with a pulsating and hard- fought derby win over title rivals Rimingtbn. The Green shuffled their

pack around, bringing in Ian Simpson, Mark Young and Peter Fletcher, making his full debut. In a tense and even first

quarter, both teams were tentative in their play. But it was the visitors

who seemed to gain the upper hand as the half pro gressed, playing the better football and dominating the

midfield exchanges. Chances were at a premi

um, however, as Hurst Green’s resolute back four stayed solid, and the only chance of worthy note fell to Jon Penman, who went dose with a header for Rim- ington. Green were limited to few

chances, and their first decent opening fell to Fletcher, who turned well in the box, only to see his shot fly over the bar. The home side switched

to an orthodox 4-4-2 after the break, which seemed to give the midfield more license to create chances.

Andy Young, Simpson

and 'Wilkinson slowly but surely began to gain the upper hand in the middle of the park as Rimington were limited to playing long balls up to their front two. ■ Green’s pressure finally

told on 75 minutes as two Simpson efforts were blocked on the line and sub s ti tu te Jason Lakeland, only on the pitch for five minutes, volleyed home through a crowd of players. The goal seemed to make

the Green more determined and strong, and again they limited the visitors to a soli tary Penman header, which

looped over the crossbar. As Rimington began to

throw men forward in search of an equaliser, a Wilkinson clearance was latched onto by Andy Young, who ran over 40 yards to finish coolly past keeper Kershaw and give Green the victory. The Green will hope this

excellent victory over a strong Rimington side will kick-start the champions into gear, as they continue their defence of their crown on Saturday at home to Set tle United, kick-off 2-15 p.m.

Lions lose hard-fought clash

CUlheroe L io n s ...........0 Skipion I M S .............2 THE Lions fought hard in defeat to an impressive Skipton LMS side. In the first half, Clitheroe

4yere dominant, with keeper Mashiter having very little to do, apart from the odd cross to gather. Time after time the

impressive defensive trio of Day, P. Clegg and man-of- the-match Avci fended oH the Skipton threat, and were also a t the s ta r t of much of the build up play. ■ Despite the commitment

and possession, the locals failed to create much in the way of clear-cut chances, although striker Holgate was twice brought down in the area, for what looked like cast-iron penalties, although the referee was unconvinced. Right wing-back Fagan

had to be stretchered off after severely damaging his shoulder, and on came tricky winger Stoddart, who combined excellently with Pinard down the right to give the Skipton outfit much to think about. Gaughan and captain J.

Clegg won the midfield bat tle, and the Lions went into the half-time break full of confidence. But it was the away team

who broke the deadlock with an excellent piece of play from a defender, who skipped past three players and then unleashed an unstoppable 30-yard rocket into the top corner. I t was a b itte r pill to

swallow for the Lions, knowing that the first goal was crucial in this tight encounter. Stoddart was once again felled in the penalty area in

the second half, with the referee again ha'ving none of it, to the relief of the clum sy Skipton defence. As the lions pressed for

ward, over-committing players up-front, Skipton LMS capitalised and made the inevitable break to pro duce the second goal and clincher. The Lions can take great

heart out of,£heir.perform- ance, but found their usual creative style somewhat stunted from a sometimes' over-physical and cynical Skipton team.

Dog let off leash to Perfect start but get season off to flier Langho lose opener

Ilelmshore Harriers .1 Dog Music and Sporls B a r ..................................5 DOG managers Paul Park- ington and Dan Blackburn enjoyed a great start to the season: as they, led their team to a convincing 4vin. The new and improved

Dog side were let off their leash, creating a number of chances which led to Paul Anthony Clark’s opener, after being played through by Blackburn, followed soon after by a cheeky chip from Jake (Jhadwick as he was left one-on-one with the keeper. Helmshore surprisingly scampered through a solid

defence to close the gap, but, undeterred, man-of- the-match Clarke increased the lead early in the second half after a parried shot from Joe Mc'Tear, with the terrier-like Clarke on hand. to pounce. . After stepping up anoth

er gear, the Dog began to play some great football, which lead to a superbly- taken header from Black burn, which firmly consoli dated Helmshore’s place in the doghouse. Parkington scurried

down the right wing, send ing over a pin-point cross for Day to finish the game in emphatic fashion.

Langho Juniors Under 12s.................................... 2 Brunlea Dynanwes . . .3 LANGHO opened brightly in their first game of the season, only to be pegged back and end up losing out by a single goal. An early Joel Phelps cor

ner was headed home by Sean Holmes to give the side the lead, before referee's man-of-the-match Phelps made it 2-0. Langho looked to be in

control at that stage. How ever, Brunlea pulled one back just before the break, before netting twice more in the second half in what proved a thrilling game.

Huncoal......................... 2 Langho Under 11s . . . .2

ATROCIOUS conditions greeted Langho for their debut game in the Black burn 11-a-side league. Despite the weather, the

. Under 11s acquitted them selves well with a draw at last year's champions Hun- coat. Langho's Sam Ribchester

was outstanding in defence, and the midfield quartet held a lively Huncoat team at bay in what was largely a defensive first half that saw man-of-the-match James Blow everywhere. Goals came from Langho

new boy Declan Acomb and captain Jake Willacy.

Locals hit six in derby

Grindlelon....................6 Rolls-Royce..................1

GRINDLETON’S great start to the season contin ued with another compre hensive win over their local rivals from Barnoldswick. In true Grindleton fash

ion, the home side found themselves a goal behind after stand-in full back Tony Middleton was harsh ly adjudged to have conced ed a penalty, which was duly dispatched by the Rolls striker. However, it wasn’t too

long before Grindleton were level through Scott Field ing, beating the keeper from a tight angle af ter good approach play from Martin Cowey. Grindleton soon took the

lead courtesy of a fourth own goal in two games, when winger Dave Parkin son supplied a cross that caused some confusion. Shortly before half-time,

Grindleton made it three, with captain Darren Bar-

row neatly heading home a cross from left winger Mar tin Dobson. With Grindleton control

ling the game and playing some of their best football in seasons, the village side extended their lead after the break, as Fielding net ted his second of the match with a cool finish. Grindleton ran riot after

that, as Rick Barrow react ed the quickest from a spilled free kick to poke the ball home to make it five. However, the best was

saved to last when winger Dave Parkinson twisted and turned the Rolls-Royce full back inside out before unleashing a strike with the outside of his right foot to wrap up the game. Man-of-the-match could

have gone to any one of the I f men wearing light blue; but Fielding took the acco lade. ■ Grindleton’s next game is

away to newly-promoted Oakworth.

Clitheroe Wolves Under S s .............. ........; .............4 Lammack Juniors.................................. ....................0 CLITHEROE Wolves started their first league cam paign with an opening day victory over a very good Lammack Juniors side. In a home fixture at Oakhill College, Wolves were two

goals to the good at the end of a competitive first half- through goals from Jack Burgess and Charlie Dewhurst. The locals then increased their lead in the second half,

wth EIliot Watson netting a third, followed by a second strike by Dewhurst.

This was a very good start to what promises to be a competitive and exciting season for the team.

Chipping top

Royal Garrison............ Chipping........................ 1

CHIPPING went top of the First Division after a four-

’ goal salvo at the start of the' second half. At the Preston Sports

Arena, Chipping could have taken the lead in the first 10 seconds, with a good cross being headed just wide by Mark Fordham. However, despite the explosive start. Chipping only threatened sporadically in the first half, and gave their hosts too

' much time on the ball. Neither side created much

in the opening period in way of clear cut chances, but a moment of quality from the Garrison midfielder saw them score with almost the last kick of the haF, curling a free kick into the corner of the net. After some stern words at

half time. Chipping came out flying at the start of the second half and blew Garri son away with an irresistible 10-minute period in which they netted four times. From a long throw in by

Grant Heyivood, centre back Danny Walmsley rose high est to cleverly nod the ball

over the keeper to equalise. Chipping’s pace and fer

vour could not be contained by the home side, and a quick two-goal burst from Fordham put the villagers firmly in control with typi cally deadly finishing. The fourth came soon

after. Fordham collected the ball on the left edge of the penalty area and swung over an inch-perfect centre for his strike partner Oily Hayhiirst to score with the deftest of headers. Royal Garrison fought

back and netted a second with a long range effort which Ireland in the Chip ping goal should have done better 4vith. The game could have been

made very interesting when, with 10 minutes to go, the home side were awarded a penalty, however. Chipping were let off the hook as the ball was rolled wide of the post. Dave Barton was named

man-of-the-match, and Chipping are in for a toiigh match on Saturday when they welcome Blessed Sacra ment to the village (kick-off 2-30 p.m'.).
