Clitheroe bag league title!
_____By Adrian Capstick
THE inevitable was achieved on Sun- ■ day as Clitheroe scooped the Veka Ribhlesdale League title and complet ed an unprecedented treble with three games to spare. Victory away at Whalley on Satur
day, and then town rivals Ribblesdale Wanderers on Sunday, wrapped up a season's hard work, and called for another space to be cleared in the Chatbum Road club's already bulging trophy cabinet. Whalley also played their part in
the title being decided. Aside from giving Clitheroe the
points on Saturday, they heat chal lengers Settle on Sunday - making it impossible for the Yorkshire side to catch-captain Neil Bolton's all stars' 25-point lead. Added to the Ramsbottom and

Twenty/20 Cup successes seen earlier this season, and Clitheroe have made Ribhlesdale League history. The Whalley game was won by a
enth league century of the season as he was caught by Palmer off the bowl ing of Da-vies. Fellow opener Dibb (56) and
combination of Bolton's and Josh Marquet's bowling, teamed with the batting prowess of professional Shahid Nawaz, who hit yet another big knock of-94 runs off 72 balls in Clitheroe's nine-wicket rout. Bolton led the bowling figures with
5-23, followed by Marquet with 3-31 as Whalley were reduced to a score of 162-9. Resistance was seen in the form of
Station Road professional Bradman Ediriweera, as he racked up 60 runs off 92 balls. And his opening partnership with
captain Martin Davies (37) had promised great things as the pair put on 81 for the first -wicket.
as after Naeem Ashraf had removed the skipper via a catch from Peter Dihb, Bolton set about removing replacement John Rain, trapped for 13, Lee Kearsley, caught behind by Simon Coulter for one, and the big wicket of Ediriweera, who was howled at 134-4. And with the West Indian gone, it

replacement Daimy Glover (8) didn't disappoint though. Moved up the order for this
encounter, the pair made up the 15 run shortfall in little time. Whalley truly gave it their all to
remove the Clitheroe pro. Every single member of the home side bar the wicketkeeper had an attempt at bowl ing as the leading line of Ediriweera and David O'Neill were smashed for 39 off five overs and 46 off eight respectively, and Simon Gorton gave 19 runs off three overs. ■ The following day at Church Mead ow it was a similar story. This league title has truly been a
team effort, as Sunday's four-wicket victory displayed. Farouk Butt led the line with the
ball in his haul of 6-52, ably assisted by Ashraf's 2-29 and a wicket apiece from Marquet and Mark Hargreaves, as Ribblesdale were bowled all out for
127. Nawaz was again the leading run
maker in the Clitheroe reply as he scored a second half-century in as many days with a score of 58. Dibb was the second biggest scorer
proved easy pickings as only Richard Palmer managed double figures -with 12, before exiting at the hand of Mar quet, caught by Nawaz. His was the seventh Whalley depar
with 27 runs but, unlike the day before, Ribblesdale's bowlers reaped more wickets. Barry Spencer (2-19) claimed the
ture at 146 as the tail end failed to bring much joy, as Jim Blair and Nicky Byrne (both 6 not out) finished the innings together. In reply, Nawaz wasted little time
in reaching his big tally as he struck the boundary 10 times and cleared the ropes once in an opening partnership that put on 151. However, he failed to make his sev-
prized dismissal of Nawaz and then Glover (9), bowling the former and trapping the latter leg'before, while Terry Braithwaite grabbed 3-33 in the form of Dibb, Ashraf (1) and Bolton
(9). This left Clitheroe needing just a
handful of runs which, apart from Daniel Turner exiting leg-before for a duck to David Howard, saw Chris Musson (2) lead the side home to the
winning tally with Simon Coulter (1)
alongside him. Young Dibb impressed again with a
strong opening display for the second time in as many days, which won him plaudits from his captain. In fact Bolton praised all the young
troops for their contributions to this "fantastic achievement" over "a long season". He also thanked the retiring Shahid
Nawaz, whose mammoth effort with the bat, as well as the all round ama teur efforts seen throughout the side. The Clitheroe pro has scored 1,604
league runs this season and is just eight runs short of matching Zahoor Elahi's league record set last year, which beat Nawaz's own record of 1,608 set in 1999. He will surely want to go out on a
high. Nawaz is 16 runs ahead of Earby
paid man Ali Azmat, the young pre tender who has taken the league by storm this season, and it will be between the two to hammer it out over the next three games. Bolton, meanwhile, wants to finish
the season with more wins to end his days as captain in style. He said: "It's great for everyone to
get it over and done with. It's been a long season and we've played a lot of games, and with three games to spare, it now means we can relax. "I just hope we can win all three, as
ju s t two defeats in 30 odd games would be a great achievement. "Sunday was a bit strange as you would have expected Settle to beat
Whalley. “We weren't aware of what was hap
pening until an hour after our game finished, but it didn't hinder our cele brating on Sunday night as the cham pagne flowed." He added: "Shahid takes most of
the credit as he has now broken his own club record. He wanted to win the league in his final season and go out on a high. "And it's perhaps time for me to call
it a day as captain. I'm 99% certain I'll step down. I've done it for six years now and it would be good for the team to have a change. . “I don't know who that will be, but
