Other VIP guests and civic dignitaries will

include Kibble Valley MP Nigel Evans and bor ough Mayor and Mayoress Coun. Peter Ainsworth and his wife, Thirza. The village will come alive to the sounds of

brass bands, African drummers, rock bands and Morris dancers. The “must visit” festival prom ises something for all ages and youngsters are being encouraged to turn out in force, dressed in weird and wonderful costumes to take part in the children’s fancy dress competition. In addition, they will have a chance to improve

their juggling skills and “clown around,” thanks to clowns from Blackpool Tower’s world renowned circus, which has rocked with laughter for more than a century. Other crowd-pleasers include a balloon race, inter-pub competition, displays by the fire serv

ice, police, church stalls and several sports events and a display by birds of prey. The festival has been jointly organised by

Whalley Chamber of Trade, management at Whalley Abbey and members of the local com munity. Chairman Coun. Mrs Joyce Holgate is keeping her fingers crossed that the weather remains dry and hopes it turns out to be a real family affair. “We want people to come and enjoy what

Whalley has to offer,” she commented. “The sum mer festival should be a real community event and one to remember for a long time. We hope it doesn’t rain during the weekend and the festival is a huge success - resulting in it becoming an annual fixture.” Admission fee is £3 adults and £1.50 children. Children under five go free. Proceeds from the fes

tival will be split between Whalley Chamber of Trade’s chosen charity and the Abbey Fellowship. Volunteers wishing to act as stewards for the weekend should to telephone either Mr Ken Red- feam on 01254 822133 or Coun. Holgate on 01254 823622. • Motorists are reminded that there will be a

one-way system in place via Church Lane. Park ing will be available at car parks throughout the village and there will be a shuttle bus service to and from Whalley Abbey. There will be no park ing spaces in the Abbey grounds, but there will be limited disabled spaces outside the Abbey. Coun. Holgate said: “We are requesting every

one’s co-operation, so that the event can be enjoyed In a safe and relaxed atmosphere. If pos sible, visitors are being urged to either car-share or arrive at the festival by bus or train.”
