Quality accolade for medical team

by Natalie Cox

A CLITHEROE medical prac tice has achieved its second national quality award. GPs and staff at the Pendleside

Medical Practice have achieved the Quality Practice Award for the second time in a decade. Organised by the Royal College

of General Practitioners, QPA recognises a high standard of qual ity patient care delivered by every member of the team. The practice, which is based at

Clitheroe Health Centre, cele brates its 80th birthday this year, and is one of only two in East Lancashire, and one of just six in the county, to achieve the award. Nationally, the Pendleside Medical Practice is one of just

eight to receive the award, which is valid for five years, for the sec ond time. Pendleside Medical Practice

achieved its first QPA in 2001, and successfully applied for further accreditation this year. To qualify, medical practices

must submit a portfolio of evi dence against 23 criteria, includ ing patient information and choice, children’s health and team values, among others. A team of four experts then vis

its for a full day to inspect the premises, systems and records, as well as speaking to team members. Dr Alan Crowther, a GP at the

practice and the Primary Care T ru s t’s professional executive chairman, said: “QPA enabled our practice to demonstrate that it provides good patient services and

Naturalists spotted 69 varieties of wildflowers

SETTING out from the village of Burnside, members of Clitheroe Naturalists followed part of the Dales Way on their latest walk. The route took them along two

miles of the long distance footpath, which goes from Ilkley to Bowness, besides the River Kent. At Cowen Head Mill, the path

squeezed around the end of a wall before reaching an attractive view of the weir, where a grey wagtail was spotted with its bright yellow breast. Shortly afterwards, pausing .for lunch, walkers watched a fami ly of six goosanders swimming in the river. After lunch, the naturalists joined a stone walled track which

led to Hagg Foot Farm and then went onto the road, which was fol lowed for 100 yards before turning left onto a bridleway and continu ing to climb to Potters Tarn. The tarn was only half full, as the level was lowered around 1990 when the dam became unsafe. Following the dam wall to a stile

on the right, the path continued to climb over the purple heather hill side to a ladder stile. At 1,000ft., this was the highest part of the walk, with magnificent views over the Lake District mountains and Morecambe Bay. Descending; the party came to

Gumal Dubs Tam and continued around it to a gated track, which

was followed for about half a mile. Then, just after a bend, they turned right through a field gate and fol lowed the wall downhill. After crossing Potter Fell Road,

the walkers joined the track to Larchbank and on to Hill Fold Farm, where they turned right onto the lane down to a T-junction. Fol lowing the signpost through the fields, they went into the woods at Sprint Mill and back to Burnside. The weather was kind, with sun

and a breeze. Some 69 different varieties of wildflowers were seen, together with several birds, includ ing swallows, house martins and a

buzzard, also butterflies and a lizard.

at the same time was an excellent way of enhancing our teamwork. A worthwhile experience - highly recommended.” Mr Mark Wilkinson, Chief

Executive of Hyndburn and Kib ble Valley POT, said: “The achievement of this award is an excellent way to celebrate the 80th birthday of the practice, which was founded in a decorators shop in Clitheroe town centre in 1926. “I t is also testament to the efforts and good practice that this practice has become known for.

Th:P C T ts c^mm^sione; of

GP services is pleased that resi dents registered with Pendleside receive a high-quality service and we are keen for this standard to be achieved by other GP practices in the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley area.”
