Top-class drama from RATS team

“Deeds not Words”, by Ribchester Amateur Theatrical Society, performed as part of Ribchester Music Festival 2006

FOR the past four years, Ribchester Amateur The atrical Society (RATS) has found a platform for per formance in the form of the Ribchester Music Festival Fringe. This year, their contribu

WOULD-BE actors, comedians, singers and musi cians are invited to meet on Tuesday at the Swan Hotel, King Street, Whalley, at 8 p.m. Mrs Joan Shorrock, who has lived in Whalley for

the past 18 months, was previously involved in act ing, producing and writing in the Whitby area for many years, and would like to organise a group from Ribble Valley residents. Backstage staff will also be needed to paint

scenery, provide props and costumes and stage manage productions. For further information, contact Mrs Shorrock on 01254 825335 or 07812 925715.

tion was “Deeds not Words”, produced and directed by Viki Mason, a short promenade produc tion focusing on the key events in the movement of the Suffragettes. A power ful (almost) all-female cast recalled with great authen ticity the dedication and passion which drove the Suffragettes to win the vote for women. Headed by Deb Groves

and Rebecca Parkinson, and featuring Keith Flood as narrator, the dedicated cast succeeded in taking their audience on a journey from the first rousing Suf fragette speeches to the funeral of Emily Davison and two personal encoun ters from victims of the “Cat and Mouse Act”. The piece was an inform

ative and bold attempt to present the times and trials of these noble women. RATS once again found a nice balance between fact and dramatisation and the music festival gave the soci ety a chance to move away from the pantomimes and plays which govern their year and explore a more

significant and historic type of theatre. The strength of “Deeds

not Words” rested in its modesty and simplicity. Strong performances and fitting costumes were a necessary part of the pro duction, but it was the structure of the piece; a snippet of historical facts and figures followed by a dramatisation of key events, a retelling of real life accounts and short monologues, which gave the production its depth. Rather than dressing the production up in exciting set and music, the cast relied on exploring the real ity and emotions these women faced with integri ty and truth. The production would

perhaps have benefited from a more central, urban setting, as most of the action - powerful suffra gette speeches and protests - would have taken place in town and city centres. However, it might have been harder to prevent a chorus of unofficial (and unpaying) audience mem bers joining the promenade had the company moved. “Deeds not Words” was

a far more credible outing for RATS; the kind of the atre they should strive to present annually.

“GLASTONBURY - THE FILM” (Cert 15); screenings on Sep tember 4th, 6th and 7th at 7-30 p.m., Stage & Screen @ St Mary’s Centre, Church Street, Clitheroe .

“SLOSH, slosh, slosh” is the melody. It is not Radiohead, or

the Levellers, or even Toots and the Maytals who open Julien Temple's epic new film about the legendary Glastonbury festival, but the sound of walking through liquid mud. For the festival is as well-known for its scenes of knee-deep mud as for the array of stars who line up to appear each year. Glastonbury, the movie,

starts as it means to go on, suffused in the real experi ences of ordinary festival goers. As Michael Eavis, the farmer who founded and still runs the bewil-

deringly vast, weird, pun gent, musical gathering in the Vale of Avalon, remarks: “I t ’s not real is it? It can't be real can it?” Now, for those unable or

unwilling to experience the mud, music and mad ness first hand, Glaston bury comes to the cinema in this strangely voyeuris tic film.
