Farm, Twiston, was banned from driving for two years and fined £1,000 with £50 costs. Blackburn Magistrates’ Court heard that she gave a reading of 289 in blood, more than three-and-a-half times the legal limit of 80.

Mr Richard Taylor (defending) told the

court that Preece, who worked as a special adviser to the European Union, was attacked on one of her regular trips to Brus sels. She spent time in hospital before returning to her farmhouse home in Twiston, where she had continued to take large quantities of medication. Mr Taylor said the damage caused had

been physical and emotional and Preece had found herself unable to sleep without the help of alcohol. That develop^ into an alco hol dependency, which eventually led to the drink-driving incident. Mr Taylor said Preece had been driving the short distance to Downham doing “a

an enterprise adviser in Blackpool and also as an adviser to the EU on telecom pro grammes. She had been travelling to Brus sels about 10 times a year since 2000 and had a set routine. Mr Taylor said on July 3rd Preece was

dragged into a park and threatened that she would be killed. On her return home she

struggled to cope and alcohol had become a habit. Passing sentence, the presiding magis
