duced by-Robin Sim mons and directed by Keith Flood, did not dis appoint, matching the quality of the previous Godber productions. Billed as “a comedy in 10 a irp o r ts” , this hardly conveyed the complexity of the material. True, i t was highly

amusing at times, but it also faced the audience with the discomfort of watching the disintegra tion of a marriage of 22 years’ duration. Phil Baugh played

Jim, a managing director who never seemed to set foot in his office, but spent his entire working life waiting in airport d ep a r tu re lounges. A very challenging role - on stage for about 90% of the performance - Phil might have wished he re a lly could have swigged the miniatures of brandy. Guy Mason played J im ’s sidekick, Steve,

with g re a t aplomb. Guy’s timing was mas terly in getting laughter from the lines, his facial expressions and the th re e -b e a t pauses he used to great effect. Viki Mason played Zoe, another complex Godber character. Superficially giggly and flirtatious, Viki also had to portray Zoe’s vulnerability and need for affection, which she did with great con viction. Caroline Hindle

played Jim’s neglected wife, Claire. She, too, had to switch from com edy to b i t te r irony to being totally distraught as Jim ends their mar riage in an'airport depar tu re lounge. Claire’s wretchedness was bril liantly conveyed through Caroline’s sobbing con fession th a t she was “pushed”. The four cameo parts

were all excellently por trayed and provided some of the best an t i dotes to th e anxiety being created by Jim and Claire. Becky Parkinson

played the airline official with such hauteur that she upstaged everyone with each lofty, accent ed, utterance. Charlotte Green was breathtakingly raunchy

as th e Czech hooker. Bryony Frost played Jim and Claire’s daughter, Annie with a flurry of eye-lash fluttering and hair-flicking. John Royle was Dan, the airline pilot who whisked Annie off her feet with great charm. He also managed to

charm Claire, but only added to Jim’s middle- aged misery. If there ever is a “Departures I I - The R e tu rn ” i t must surely show Annie and Dan ending their mar riage in an airport depar ture lounge sometime in the future. I t seems inevitable. Compliments are also

due to the design team. The minimalist staging provided a perfect back drop to the fast-paced dialogue. Boarding card tickets and stylish pro gramme cards continued with the airport theme. Perhaps an a ir stew ardess-style ann-ounce- ment prior to curtain up welcoming everyone “on board” and announcing th e safety procedures might have completed the illusion. A thought-provoking,

challenging play, which amused and unsettled th e audience in equal measure.

“THE HISTORY BOYS” (Cert 15); screen ings on December 4th, 6th and 7th at 7-30 p.m. at Stage & Screen @ St Mary’s Centre, Church Street, Clitheroe

BASED on the play by Alan Bennett, “The History Boys” tells the story of an unruly class of bright, funny history students in pursuit of an undergradu ate place at Oxford or Cambridge. Bounced between their maverick English master

(Richard Griffiths), a young and shrewd teacher hired to up their test scores (Stephen Campbell Moore), a grossly out-numbered history teacher (Frances de la Tour), and a headmaster obsessed with results (Clive Merrison), the boys attempt to sift through it all to pass the daunting university admis sions process. Their journey becomes as much about how educa

tion works as it is about where education leads. Audiences should be aware that this film contains

very strong language and some strong sex references. STAGE & SCREEN COMPETITION

Question: Frances de la Tour found fame as Miss Jones in 1970s sitcom “Rising Damp”, but who played her scheming landlord, Rigsby?
