eastIancsnews.co.uk There’s still a need
for recycling centre I AM dismayed by the proposed clo sure of the Petre Household Waste Recycling Centre. I am a regular user of this popular facility and it is obvi ous to me that there is still a huge demand for it. I visit the centre both at weekends,
when often there is a queue to gain entry, and during the week when it is quieter, but never empty. The recent investment in kerbside
service has not removed the need for a recycling centre.
Prior to the introduction of wheelie
bins we had a weekly dustbin collec tion, a fortnightly paper collection and a fortnightly garden waste collec tion. The introduction of the new bins has simply transferred the garden waste to bins and introduced a new waste stream of small recyclable items i.e. glass bottles, plastics and tin cans. These items represent only a very small proportion o f the waste processed by the Petre facility every year.
The skips for bottles, tins, plastics,
paper, glass and garden rubbish are. still very heavily used despite our new
bins, but the centre also offers many other services. There are skips for scrap metals, wood, hardcore, card board and non-recyclable items all in regular use. There is a disposal facility for textiles, fridges, freezers, batteries and engine oil. As pointed out in your article, this
centre serves 15,000 people. Do coun cil officials really believe that trans porting 4,000 tonnes of rubbish 10 miles in private cars makes environ mental sense?
How many extra car journeys will
t l^ create and can neighbouring facil ities cope with the increased demand? I seriously doubt it. I feel that yet again Lancashire
County Council is penny pinching in the wrong areas. This scandalous pro posal is a backward step for the com^ munity, for recycling and for the envi ronment and I urge local residents who value this facility to give it their full support. In addition, if the centre does close,
will I receive a reduction in my council tax to reflect the reduction in local, services available to me? I rather think not, don’t you?

TIC: Back petition
with protest letters THE public petition for retention of Clitheroe Tourist Office has been well- supported. Authorities do not always heed this approach. Let us back it up in another way. In recent years the Lancashire
County Council itself, via its county museum service, has been spending time and money supporting the Her itage Lottery Scheme. It should not have decided to alter existing tourist information services until this posi tion is clear and any re-development in the Castle grounds is completed - several years away. Presumably the county council
realises the importance Ribble Valley Borough Council attaches to seeking financial support from local organisa tions and businesses towards the proj ect. It would be a good idea if Rotary, the Chamber of Trade, Clitheroe the Future, Ribblesdale Cement and oth ers wrote their own letters early in the New Year backing the local petition. Any letter should stress the bad tim ing of the county council’s decision to close the existing office. Ask for at least a five-year postponement.
The very well used double fronted window space facility -
full of updat
ed information - is not available at the library.
NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED Give us opportunity
to recycle more I AM writing to request that Clitheroe be supplied with recycling facilities. I have recently moved back from
Accrington, where we were provided boxes and bags for glass, tin, plastic bottles and paper. Surely the local council should be perfectly capable of doing the same? I know many people who have stat
ed that they would definitely recycle everything they could if it was col lected the same way the paper bags are. Over 70% of our rubbish can be recycled, but we are only given bags for our waste paper. How utterly absurd! Clitheroe should not be an excep
tion to the rising awareness that our planet is suffering and something must be done!

6,000 hours of work
per year for free! I WAS pleased to read Mrs Colman’s letter (November 23rd) praising the fine condition of Clitheroe’s rail sta
tion and the courteous and helnful staff there. I fully agree that the Interchange
staff do a good job, but can I also explain that all four stations on the line are looked after on a voluntary basis by Ribble Valley Rail members. They do the cleaning, litter-picking,
removal of graffiti and planting, put ting in approximately 6,000 hours per year - free, gratis and for nothing! Gordon Wilson and his helpers look
after Clitheroe Station, Alan Bowles has responsibility for Whalley, Brian Haworth has Langho and Ken
Roberts has Ramsgreave and Wilp- shire. They and all the Ribble Valley Rail volunteers do a fantastic job, with the
support of Ribble Valley Borough Council.
