LIMITATION OF RIVER RIBBLE ESTUARY NETTING LICENCES AND RIVER RIBBLE FISHERIES BYELAW


Notice is hereby given that it is the intention of the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to confirm an Order made by the Environment Agency under Section 26 of the above Act. Additionally, in exercise of the powers conferred on It by Section 210 and Schedule 25 to the Water Resources Act 1991 the Agency has made a new fishery byelaw.


The Order v/ill:


• provide that the number of licences to be allocated In any year for fishing for salmon and migratory trout with nets In the Ribble Estuary shall be limited to 2 (two):


• provide for the Issue of additional licences if this number Is insufficient to satisfy the applications of all those who held such a licence in the preceding year;


• provide that not more than one licence shall be issued to each person in respect of the area described as the Ribble Estuary


The byelaw will:


• restrict the number of salmon that may be caught and killed when fishing with rod and tine on the River Ribble to two per season.


The Net Limitation Order in combination with the fisheries byelaw is required as the River Ribble is currently failing its management objectives for its salmon population and the level of exploitation needs to be reduced.


Both the Net Limitation Order and the byelaw are Intended to apply for a period o i l 0 years.


Copies of the Order and the byelaw may be obtained, free of charge, on application to the undersigned.


Any objection to the confirmation of the Order or byelaw should be made In writing and addressed to Gloria Akinyemi, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Area 5E, 3-8 Whitehall Place, London SW1A 2HH not later than 5 January 2007.
