children are young at Christm^ because that's so exciting. Christmas has always been a major event in our house, right from when I was young. My mother and father never had much money, but so much planning went into it. My father was always full of surprises, the presents would be hidden on top of curtain rails and behind settees, and maybe you thought you'd got all your presents but at 5pm he'd say, 'Oh, whose present is that up there?'"

favourite Christ mas was one that we had three years ago. I'd just had my last baby and it was me and my husband and our children. He's Danish, so we cel ebrate on Christ mas Eve, and all the kids stayed up late. I decorated the table, we were in candle light, and I'd done a whole kind of goose

. thing and the herring and all that revolt ing Danish stuff. It was freezing cold out side and it was just me and my family, and I felt so proud to have my husband and these three gorgeous children. I'll never forget that. I t was just a very sweet, cosy, lovely moment."
■ ANNE-MARIE DUFF, 36 "I can remember a Christmas when we
were kids, and my brother and I got loads of great presents. There were loads of fan tastic photos from it. My brother got the Operation game and I remember getting the Bunty annual. There's great photos of us sitting under a 1970s silver Christmas tree, with our mouths wide open. That was pretty cool."

turkey last year because there were ju s t the three ofj^us and we were going skiing. I'm crap a t it. Last year is the last time I'll ever ski. I'm hopeless. We were going down this slope, a blue one, and my husband Grant was ski ing backwards holding me. Well, I'd nearly divorced him by the time we got to the bottom. We've had 10 skiing holidays now and I still can't do it. I've never had any accidents though. I think I've got bones made of rubber."

boyfriends; it's just the original family unit and we open presents together. I think we just like the fact that it's always just us and never changes. It's a tradition thing. One day when either me or one of my sisters gets married that will obviously have to change but at the moment we get away with it."
■ RONNIE
CORBETT, 76 "We'll be up in
Scotland. We have a home in East Lothian overlooking the Firth of Forth and Muirfield Golf Course. Our two daughters and the four grandchildren, aged between 19 montlis and 18 years, will have Christmas up here. We have traditional Christmas lunch and I do the turkey. I follow Delia - her recipes are fail-safe. I'll go for a walk on the golf course afterwards. If there are party games I'll leave the room."'
■ JULIO IGLESIAS, 63 "For the last 40 years or so, Christmas
hasn't been something I enjoy very much. Now, with my new generation of children, it's something that might improve. Christ mas for me was best when I was 10,12,15 years old. After that they just start to dis appear in my memory. The time in the middle (where I had my first generation of children) I did really love it, that philoso phy of two weeks of family together, because there are so many people who don't come together as a family. Now it's more difficult for my family. So for me Christmas is just a time when offices close, and I don't have anything to do. I get full of desperation."
■ BILLIE
PIPER,24 "My most
m e m o r a b l e Christmas was when I was with Chris (Evans) and we lived in this really big house. We ordered this 24ft tree. Four men had to carry it in. It took me three week-
, ends to decorate and I bought 16 sets of fairy lights. And there were only two of us and the dog! I t was a nightmare to get
down. It took a day to get all the stuff off it."
because I came second in X Factor and then I had my time with my kids. That will always stick in my mind. And obvi ously Christmas times with my mum were memorable (Andy's mum passed away during his time on The X Factor). She cooked traditional West Indian food." ® Continued on next page

PARTYGOERS are becoming sophisticated and expect more than the traditional offering of lager for the lads and wine for the ladies. A good idea is to stock up on versatile drinks like Benedictine, which can be enjoyed neat or mixed with other ingre dients to create cocktails. French liqueur Benedic
tine is an ideal festive tip ple, with its unique blend of 27 herbs and spices, infused with saffron, honey and caramel, mak ing it different from other drinks and suited to the Christmas period. It is an excellent winter
warmer, either added to hot water (creating the renowned Bene 'n' Hot which is the top tipple in Burnley’s pubs and clubs) or to coffee and cream for a tasty twist. Produced in 1510 and

named after its creator, a Benedictine monk, it first came to the UK in 1918, when soldiers from the 11th Lancashire battalion brought the liqueur home from the First World War trenches, where i t had helped to ward off the bit ter French winters. Nick Morton, brand
manager for Benedictine, says: "The history of Benedictine is perfectly suited to the traditions of Christmas."

up were spent on the beach in tents and caravans, and it was always with my nan and grandad and mum and dad and my sisters. We would camp and it summed up what my child hood was all about - being outside and pla^ng games, not playing com puters inside. We would always be out on the beach, going yabbying (fishing for crayfish)."

when my husband bought me the Pauline Calf video for my birthday, which I opened that morning and put on. She came on'and started saying, 'I'll tell you who I hate - that f***ing Carol Vorderman', and there was this huge rant about me for about five minutes. I was helpless with laugh ter."

mon has a spicy aroma; it has a fragrant, sweet, warm scent which we seem as a nation to associate completely with Christmas. Most of the list are pleasing, comforting, domestic smells; the pine fragrance of our Christmas trees, a wood or coal fire, roast turkey, brandy or mulled wine and mince pies. But some less appealing smells make the top 10. We were surprised to find 'old people' and over-cooked brussel sprouts made the list, when tangerines didn't!"
