“Through our various
initiatives we have all learnt just how much even small changes in our busi ness can make a vast dif ference to our impact on the environment.” Ultraframe was also
commended in three other categories - waste minimi sation, health and safety and the business in the community. The latter was based on
staff to always turn off lights and computers when they are not in use, and Ultraframe predicts th a t by May, 2007, the campaign will have saved a staggering £36,000, some of which will be invested into further envi ronmental Improvements. Rachel Cundey, quality
and environmental co ordinator at Ultraframe UK, commented: “We are delighted to have received this award, which recog nises the efforts of the entire company to make changes to the way we operate for the better.
recognition of the compa ny’s improvements to its manufacturing process, which have reduced the to ta l energy , used by 13.4% and its comprehen sive, business-wide Switch Off campaign. This has encouraged
the success of a seven- month engineering project Ultraframe conducted with sixth form pupils from Clitheroe Royal Grammar School as part of a national scheme to encourage scientific curiosity through work- related learning. The waste minimisation
commendation was awarded for Ultraframe’s improved waste manage ment system, product optimisation and supply simplification. Finally, the health and
safety commendation was given for the company’s improvements in risk assessment, accident pre vention and investigation, as well as compliance ahead of legislation changes. Our picture shows Pen-

“TOP BRASS” members of the new East Lancashire Prima ry Care Trust enjoyed a guided tour of Clitheroe Community Hospital. The health chiefs want
ed to see for themselves the much-valued commu nity hospital facilities and to meet the staff who work for the PCT locally. A “staff roadshow” was arranged at the hospital in Chatburn Road, with the PCT’s chief executive Mr David Peat and chairman Mrs Kathy Reade, host ing the briefing session. In addition, Mrs Val
Carman, director of serv ice provision, was on hand to meet the staff, answer any questions, and to see for herself the level of health provision at the town’s community hospi tal.
The visitors were given
a full explanatory tour by matron manager Mrs Jacqueline Threlfall, who
has run the hospital for the past three years. In addition to their
front-line interest, all three of the “top brass” are no strangers to the area. Mr Peat lives in the Ribble Valley with his wife, Theresa, and two teenage sons, while Mrs Reade and Mrs Carman
live in East Lancashire. “We are very keen to
get out into the work places of our front-line staff on a regular basis to meet up and exchange information, to hear their thoughts and let them know ours,” said Mr Peat. “We have good staff and we mean to continue
the good work, with a ‘business as usual’ mes sage to the public. As far as Ribble Valley residents are concerned, they will be seeing the same health vis itors, the same district nurse and have the same GP. That’s the main point as far as the public is con cerned.”
The staff meeting in
Clitheroe is the first of a series planned for roll-out over the forthcoming months. Our picture shows (from
left) Mr Peat, Mrs Reade, Mrs Threlfall and Mrs Carman during the special “meet-the-staff” event. (B011106/3)
Ken’s photographed a piece of history
AN unexpected, but inspiring change to the programme saw what was to be a “members’ evening” at the Ribblesdale Cam era Club given over instead to an appreciation of work featured in the Swansea International Exhi bition. The quality of the photogra
phy on display was excellent and the originality and creativity breathtaking. The digital projec tions, in particular, were exempla ry.
Also during the evening, club
secretary Ken Geddes described how he had worked with the Ainsworth Research Trust and
Towneley Hall, Burnley, to pho tograph an early view of Clitheroe, painted by Mattius Read in the early 1720s. The photograph of the paint
ing has been hung in Clitheroe Library and a second copy will be presented to the museum. Coinci- dently, the Ribblesdale Camera
Club’s own exhibition was hung in Clitheroe Reference Library at the same time. Next will be the judging of the
club members’ own digital images. The club meets at West Bradford Village Hall at 7-30 p.m. on Tuesdays. Inquiries to 01200 423474.
