‘We will come good’ - boss!

I - " - By Adrian Capstick

"WE will come through it!" T h a t is the message from

Clitheroe manager Chris Stammers in light of recent below-par per formances. Expectation levels have been set

high since the club's exceptional s ta r t to the season, so recent dis plays like Saturday's 7-3 defeat at Bradford Park Avenue have been hard to swallow for some. Injuries and more questionable

refereeing did not help their cause on Saturday, but in Tuesday's 2-2 draw against Chorley they only had theirselves to blame for points lost in a game they dominated. Stammers said: "I think there

were more positives than negatives on Tuesday. “Expectation levels have been

high since the beginning of the sea son and I honestly believe that if we stick together we will come through this tough spell -

it will come good

again." "Two errors cost us and we were

disappointed n o t to come away with the points. "I thought we bossed the first

half. 'The pitch wasn't the best and we tried to be more direct than our usual passing style, but if only we'd taken our early chances..."

our box and all were netted, credit to Bradford for being so clinical, but it should never have been that easy. All the players in question have apologised, but of course now is too late. "If you take away the first 17

minutes or so i t would have been quite even, but a t the end of the day it's been costly” The Blues return to the FA Tro

away game, but we've already done better away from home this season than last. “I've said to them they've got to

keep on going, as if we keep on pick ing up a point every away game, th a t's only what I would expect from us if we were in-form." Centre back Gregg Anderson

Chorley........................................ 2 Clitheroe FC................................2 TWO sides on the back of heavy defeats ran out with a point apiece at Chorley on Tuesday night, but it was definitely two points lost from Clitheroe's perspective. Lamb's pace turned the Chorley defence, to find Jones on the edge of the box, and from his blocked shot, Dempsey scambled the ball home. But calamity befell the Blues in

injury time when Peter Collinge caihe out to meet a long ball, only for centre back Jeff Underwood to head over the keeper and grant striker John Bluck an opportunist's goal.

Will sweeps the board! By Adrian Capstick

WILL Driver's outstanding cricket ing achievements this season were acknowledged a t not one but two presentation evenings. The 17-year-old Read and Lan

cashire CCC all-rounder set the crease alight at Whalley Road this year, out-batting and put-bowling many a professional in the Veka Rib- blesdale League. He was inevitably named the club's leading player with both bat

, and ball. But aside from sweeping the board

with the batting and bowling tro phies, and claiming both the player and performance of the year acco lades at Saturday's presentation, he was also presented with a miniature cricket bat in a case, complete with match by match scores to mark the feat of scoring over 1,000 league runs and breaking the club's amateur bat ting record. The previous night, the Lan

cashire Under 17s captain, who broke into the county's second team this year, won the Lancashire Junior

four centuries in five innings in the space of 12 days back in July, two for the Under 17s and two for Read. And understandably the talented

young cricketer was overjoyed with the recognition, and how his game has developed. He said: "I'm delighted at how

things have gone. I've been in previ ous years to Lancashire's presenta tion evening, but there were nowhere near as many people, so Friday was overwhelming really. "They've just selected the acade

my again and I'll be back training at Christmas. Hopefully I'll work hard in the winter and look to establish myself with Lancashire seconds. "I improved a lot last season and I

think I can improve as much again. I aim to better my taliy next season and get more wickets for Read." In the meantime. Will continues

Player of the Year award in front of nearly 400 people at Old Trafford. He received the trophy from first

team player Tom Smith, a product of the same Lancashire Cricket Acade my, and director John Stanworth made particular reference to Will's

his studies at Burnley College, where he is undertaking a sports course, and he would like to thank Warren Eastham, his dad Steve, and both Kyle and Gary G'Connor for their support. Will is pictured after receiving his awards. (B171006/3d)
