Road accident boy is stable

A CLITHEROE teenager remains stable in hospital a week after being involved in a collision with a car while on his early-morning paper round.' Glenn Matthews (13), of

Somerset Avenue, sustained serious head and arm injuries after the incident, which involved a silver Cit roen Saxo, as he crossed Chatburn Road - just yards from his home. The accident happened

last Thursday about 7-30 a.m., near Clitheroe Cricket Club, when the Ribblesdale High School Technology College pupil was delivering newspapers. Police and ambulance

were quickly on the scene and he was rushed to Royal Blackburn Hospital. The road remained closed

to traffic for around two- and-a-half hours as officers carried out a detailed exami nation at the scene. Glenn was later trans

ferred to Pendlebury Chil dren’s Hospital, in Manches ter, and remained in the Intensive Care Unit where he underwent several inves tigations. It is understood that he

has now been moved out of intensive care and is stable. • For the full story, turn

Porn films in Video store’

by Faiza Afzaal

A BILLINGTON man who k i t te d out his garage like a h igh-stree t video store has escaped a jail sentence, but has been warned he will go to jail if he re-offends. Trading Standards officers said

the home of Hugh Geoffrey Hamer (59), was “bursting at the seams” with fake DVDs, music CDs and computer games - complete with shelving, a counter and CCTV, some of which are pictured.

The offences came to light after

officers seized 7,500 counterfeit discs, with a s tre e t value of £100,000, at father-of-two Hamer’s house in Pasturelands Drive, in June last year. Hamer was committed to Bum-

ley Crown Court by Hyndburn magistratesTast month after pleading guilty to 25 specimen offences under the Trade Marks Act 1994 and Video Recordings Act 1884. The court heard how Hamer,

who hves with his mother and had been previously cautioned twice

for similar offences, had computer equipment containing thousands- upon-thousands of music, film and computer-game images together with the titles of numerous discs, including more than 1,100 unclas sified and sex-shop-only porno graphic films. Hamer, who had prepared busi

ness cards and flyers to advertise his illegal activities, even boasted to trading standards officers that he stocked more titles than many legitimate shops.

DONATIONS totalling £6,300 have been presented to terminally-ill cancer sufferer Pauline Altham. In just one month after the fund-raising campaign

began, highlighted by articles in the .Clitheroe Adver tiser and Times, there seems to be no stopping the gen erosity of local residents. “I’ve been given donations from friends, relatives

and people who I ’ve known all my life,” said Mrs Altham, of Goosebutts Lane. “I’ve also received some really sincere and beautiful letters.”

Mrs Altham (62) has been refused the drug Cetux-

imab on the NHS because the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has not yet completed its appraisal. She is therefore having to find more than £40,000 a year to pay for the treatment privately. Recei-ving the final dose of her series of six treat

ments of the drug on Tuesday, Mrs Altham will now have to wait for a scan to tell her how effective it has

been. Up and coming fund-raising events include a Good-

as-New Sale organised by staff at Pendleside Medical Practice. It will take place at St Michael and St John’s Social Centre, Lowergate, Clitheroe, this Saturday, October 21st between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Entrance to the event will cost 50p and organisers

would appreciate any “good as new clothing” freshly laundered and on hangers if possible. Accessories are also welcome. All items should be handed into either Jean or Pauhne atthe Pendleside reception.
