US guest proves a fascinating choice

ONE of America’s leading portrait and wedding photographers, Dave Newman, was guest speaker at a very special meeting of Ribblesdale Camera Club. Around 60 people attended the

lecture and demonstration, including photography students and staff from Nelson and Colne, Craven and Blackburn Colleges, plus members from Ribblesdale, Padiham, Black burn, Nelson and Chorley Camera Clubs. The meeting was held at Whalley

Golf Club, a particularly comfort able venue for this kind of event and specially arranged to accommodate the large audience. Mr Newman lives in Salt Lake

City, Utah, but was on a lecture tour to Ireland and Malta. His visit to the Ribble Valley was arranged by club member Steve Ashcroft, who

knew him from a previous meeting. His talk began by looking at the

lighting used by the great painters: Leonado da Vinci was the first to give true modelling of faces by the the control of light. Although condensed from a much

larger presentation, the talk and demonstration included clear dia grams on how Mr Newman sets up his studio lights for portraiture, how to use diffent kinds of lighting and reflectors and how to tackle outdoor portraits. Invaluable advice was given about

photographing groups and how to. ensure that sitters are presented in an elegant, but informal pose. He used many of his award-win

ning portraits as illustrations of how to do it and showed similar pictures where errors in lighting or posing gave total disasters.

and crafts and many more. Next week’s event will have a

Hallowe’en theme, reflected in many of the games and activi ties planned. It runs from Monday, October 23rd, to Fri day the 27th inclusive, with extended hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily to enable parents to drop off and pick up their children outside working hours. For inore details of the Playscheme, call in at Roefield or phone on 01200 442188.

were not forgotten. A picture of Bryce Canyon, Utah, was bought by Fuji and 40,000 of their Christmas Cards featured the photograph. Other successful pictures were from Britain and Ireland. Club chairman John Bradley, in

his words of thanks, described Mr Newman as a “consumate photogra pher”. This was very true, but it can

be added that he has equal skills as a teacher, chatting informally with good humour, cutting away jargon and technicalities and showing clear and simple presentations. All present agreed it was a memorable evening. Our picture shows special guest

Walk steeped in history

TWENTY members of Clitheroe Ram blers set off from Cotton Tree and fol lowed Colne Water through Ball Grove Country Park. This recreation area originally housed

one of Europe’s largest tanneries, with weirs, races and two reservoirs. It is a good example of how an industrial area can be made into an attractive park, with one reservoir now a fishing lake and the other a nature reserve. The route then followed the Pendle Way

through the fields to Wycoller. After a break in the ruins of Wycoller Hall, with its well-documented Bronte associations, the group took the track past the clam bridge and then went along the conces sionary path up Tumhole Clough.

After another stretch on the Pendle

Way, the group toiled up the steep slopes of Boulsworth Hill on access land with only a feint path to reach the Great Saucer Stones, which provided shelter for a lunch break. The weather was good and the views excellent. The summit at Lad Law was reached

by following the ridge along a rather muddy route. The steep descent followed the concessionary path past Abbot Stone and back to the Pendle Way. The return to Cotton Tree was by field paths, which passed the Victorian beauty spot Lumb Spout and the attractive old farms. Far Wanless and Near Wanless. The area is full of historical interest and a beautiful day showed it to great advantage.

MP hits out at school bus fare increase FRUSTRATION at rising school bus fares has prompted Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans to write to Lancashire County Council. His letter to County Coun.Tony Martin,

Leading the way in children's fitness, Pendle Leisure Trust are launching a range of interactive activities featuring computer games that are activated by the body, rather than the thumbs. These innovative 'active' sessions encourage children to keep fit while their minds are distracted by a game.

Sue Slater, Executive Manager for Operations at Pendle Leisure Trust commented: "All children love technology & with our range of interactive games they can do both; the longer they play, the stronger S. fitter they get!"

The first example is the 'activewall' in Pendle Leisure Centre's

"main sports hall in Colne. The activewall has four 8'4" 'splat the rat' style computerised panels & offers hundreds of different

the cabinet member for sustainable devel opment, highlights the serious concerns raised by many of his constituents in the rural area. Mr Evans commented: “Sadly we have seen Lancashire County Council once more raise the fares for children in the Ribble Valley to take the bus to school. Ribble Valley already has one of the high est-council taxes and this should clearly cover any rise in bus fares. “It is middle England that is being hit the hardest. ley who are working the hardest to provide for their children are going to be punished the most.” Mr Evans continued: “An increase of a

flat rate of £1 for up to three miles, £1.50 for between three and eight miles and £2 thereafter will put a huge strain on the purse strings of many families. Even for children travelling a short distance, this is an increase of 40p per journey and a total weekly cost of £10 per child to get to school. This is a lot of money, especially for families who have a lot of children. “This is a disgrace and I have written to

Tony Martin telling him that we are all paying huge council taxes and we are now being clobbered to use our local services.”

Baptism of fire for newly-promoted chess club

, LAST season Clitheroe Chess Club’s A ; team won the North East Lancs chess League Division 2 and were duly promoted to Division 1 for the first time in about 10

:■ years. They played their first match against

www.pendleleisuretrust.eo.uk

: Great Harwood A team and, as expected, it ; was a real baptism of fire. Despite the ■ return of two strong players from former . years, the final score was Clitheroe A 1 - ! Great Harwood A 4. The single point for ; Clitheroe came from drawn games for Paul Fallon and Tony Pounder. . Clitheroe B team finished bottom of the

Second Division last season, but avoided relegation because a new team in’the Third

Division allowed promotion without the corresponding relegation. The first match of the season was against

Crusaders B, of Blackburn, the largest club in the league. Clitheroe began well with a win on board two for Eric Mansfield. This was followed by draws on boards one and four for John Smith and Ray Sutcliffe respectively, but a defeat on board five for John Moxham levelled the score at 2 - 2. The final game to finish was Phil Tittering- ton on board three. He built up a powerful position with ovewhelnung pawn strength and his opponent was forced to resign giv ing Clitheroe B a 3—2 win, two points and a very encouraging start to the season.
