HUNDREDS of steam fair enthusi asts descended on Slaidburn over the weekend to enjoy the annual Steam and Vintage Vehicle Display. Even England’s opening match against
Paraguay on Saturday failed to deter crowds of spectators, who turned out to enjoy a feast of attractions on show during the popular two-day event. Glorious sunshine helped make the well-
organised fair a weekend to remember for both the young and old alike. The main attractions included five full-
sized steam engines, several vintage trac tors and cars and fairground organs.
Two engines, which steamed all the way from Manchester and Preston, proved a hit
with the spectators. For mums there was a craft fair, rural arts and crafts, an antiques fair, plus a vari
ety of stalls. Youngsters were kept entertained thanks
to a thrilling fairground and pupils from Brennands Endowed Primary School, Slaidburn, joined in the fun by staging a
maypole dance. In addition to the numerous activities,
visitors enjoyed a sheep shearing demon stration by local farmer Mr Thomas
Robinson. Mr David McNamee, who organised the
weekend spectacular with the help of his wife, Jean, hailed it a massive success.
“I t was absolutely magnificent,” he
commented. “The weather was kind to us and there were lots of exhibits on show to please the
visitors. “Hopefully, we can have a repeat of the
weekend’s success next year.” Mr McNamee added that a substantial
amount of money was raised, which will be donated to boost funds for Slaidbum’s new village hall and towards the St Andrew’s Church bell fund. He expressed thanks to local landowner,
Mr John King-Wilkinson, and Mr Nick Hey, landlord of the Hark to Bounty public house and his staff for their tremendous support.
