Don’t mourn for me, says Geoff

A REQUEST for mourners to wear bright colours was honoured at the funeral of a well respected Read man. _St John’s -Church in the village was

packed for the funeral of Mr Geoffrey Bot toms who died at the age of 82. And a second request for his remains to

be scattered on the allotment that he tend ed for the past 40 years will also be carried out by his family. •Mr Bottoms, pictured, grew vegetables

which enabled his family to be self suffi cient and he also supplied relatives, friendg. and neighbours with his produce. An a-vid cricket fan who was also a keen

player in his younger days, one of Mr Bot toms’ finest hours was when he played for Read Cricket Club, known as the “love of his life,” when the team won the Ribbles- dale League Championship in 1949. Mr Bottoms also played for Read Football Club and was one of the prime movers behind setting up tennis courts which he helped to maintain. One of five children, Mr Bottoms

Folklore, myths and medicine for Third Age

Watson, a speaker for the past 28 years on folklore, myths and popu lar beliefs. He told how toads could be used

A FASCINATING talk on “Medi cine and Magic” was enjoyed by more than 100 people when Clitheroe University of the Third Age (U3A) met. Giving the talk was Mr Peter

to cure thrush, why magicians use a Greek word, “abracadabra”, to help with their tricks, how elves were believed responsible for much treachery and how “hocus pokus” and positive thinking kept many ill nesses away! Modem thinkers may declare all

this “rubbish!”, but remember the alternative was surgery carried out with the hapless victim strapped to a table and held down by two good men while the operation took place, without anaesthetic. No surprise then that so many looked to alternative remedies!

Friends of Earth

FRIENDS of the Earth will be holding a social meeting on Mid summer’s Day - June 21st- at the Pendle Club, Lowergate, Clitheroe. All are welcome to attend for

refreshments, to watch some short videos and to learn more about getting involved at a local level.
