A LORRY cab and its engine compart ment were destroyed in a fire on Satur day morning.- Fire-fighters from Clitheroe were
alerted to the blaze at 4-44 a.m. by a passing motorist. Dave McGrath, Watch Manager for
Clitheroe Retained Station, said the vehicle had been parked up a lane about
100 metres from the A682, near Rim- ington. He added that investigations into the
cause of the fire were continuing and added that officers are also trying to discover why the vehicle, which has been traced to an address in Ilkley, came to be in the Ribble Valley at that time.

A SPLENDID £20,000 has been raised towards a new heart scan ner in memory of a 29-year-old Ribble Valley man who died from a rare form of leukaemia. Family and friends gathered for a
charity white tie and diamonds sum mer ball to honour the memory of Graham Gardner. Graham died last April after suf fering from disseminated lymphoma
- a condition which causes tumours. Graham, of Gleneagles Drive in
Brockhall Village, who worked as a lorry driver, spent the last few weeks of his life in the intensive care unit at Blackburn Royal Infirmary. The Dunkenhalgh Hotel, in Clay-
ton-le-Moors, was the venue for the glitzy ball and attractions during the well-organised charity spectacu lar included a Champagne reception, a three-course meal, plenty of fun-
filled games, a tombola and an auc tion, which raised a magnificent £ 11,000. Entertainment in the form of an
“upbeat” disco and a band called “80s experience” ensured people took a step back in time and danced the night away to music from that decade. One of the organisers of the ball,

A VICTORIAN horse-drawn carriage took newlyweds Miss Sandra Knowles and Mr David Simpson to a reception in Worston. The couple, both of Bolton-by-Bowland,
were married at St Peter and St Paul’s Church in their home village. A mobile hairdresser, the bride is the
daughter of Mr and Mrs John and Rose mary Knowles, now of Clayton-le-Moors, and formerly of Chatbum Road, Clitheroe. Her bridegroom works as a cabinet maker, carpenter and joiner. Given away by her father, the bride wore
an ivory strapless gown decorated with embroidery, pearl and crystal detail. She carried a hand-tied bouquet of passion and bianca roses with freesia. She was attended by her friends Miss
Nicola Wilson and Miss Della Dewhurst who wore claret-coloured strapless dresses with crystal detail and carried bouquets to complement the bride’s. Best man .was the bridegroom’s brother
Mr Peter Simpson. His other brother Mr Alec Simpson, his
brother-in-law, Mr Nigel Quayle, and the bride’s brother, Mr Harvey Knowles, were groomsmen. Following the ceremony, a reception was
held at the Calf’s Head Hotel in Worston. On return from honeymoon in North

WHALLEY businesswoman Mrs Hilary Cookson is to become the next chairman of the British Shops and Stores Association (BSSA). Mrs Cookson, the owner of the award-
winning ladies’ fashion retailer Maureen Cooksons in Whalley, will take the pres tigious title at a lunch in London, later today. The BSSA represents hundreds of
independent shops throughout the coun try including the world’s famous depart ment store Harrods and John Lewis. The organisation works on their behalf in national debates as well as offering support services to businesses. Mrs Cookson said: “This is an almost

VANDALS snapped off the wing mirrors of three cars parked in Clitheroe Road, Whalley. The offenders caused more than £300 in
