Cup Final ‘bang’ was not quite what we expected!
WHILE everyone hoped the World Cup would
fini.sh with a bang, we didn’t get quite
what we expected. A tournament that looked set for classic
status in the group stages tailed off in the knockout phase as fear of failure took hold. And after a dearth of final thrillers down
the years, dating back to Argentina’s dra matic 1986 success against West Germany, how we prayed that we would have a show
piece worthy of the name. We needed an individual to light up the
magnificent Olympic Stadium in Berlin, or for a team at the peak of their powers to col lectively stamp their name indelibly in the annals of history.

J T l Sadly, what we did get was
the sickening sight of a true great damaging his legacy with an act of violence that left you empty inside, and a final that failed to catch fire, despite both teams scoring for the first time
in 20 years. Many observers, sickened by
the thought of what might have provoked such a vicious response from Zinedine Zidane, and the fact that the best team on the night lost on penalties, have, however, overlooked that Italy surely were deserved vic
tors overall. A competition dominated, as
Michel Platini noted, by coach es, rather than players, was won by the best tactician in Marcello Lippi. His side, exhausted at the
end of a mammoth campaign, may have reverted to Italian type in the final and shown lit tle ambition in the second half and extra time. For the most part, they have
been the most expansive Italy we have seen in decades, and, paired with the best defence in the tournament, made for a potent force. Seven Azzurri players were
named in the 23-man All Star Team, Gianluigi Buffon - who also won the Lev Yashin Award for the best goalkeeper - skip per Fabio Cannavaro, for me, the best defender in the world, and the player of the tourna ment, Gianluca Zambrotta, Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gat- tuso, Francesco Totti and Luca Toni. A total of 10 Italian players
scored in the tournament, while Lippi’s men only conceded Cristian Zaccardo’s own goal against the USA and Zidane’s oh-so-cheeky penalty in the final. The best keeper, the best defence, arguably the best mid- field - and certainly the best midfield performance from Gattuso, Pirlo and Totti against Germany - added up to a fourth World Cup triumph. Some will say the Italians
were unimpressive up front, but Toni, Alberto Gilardino, Vin cenzo laquinta and Filippo Inzaghi all found the net, along with the more advanced Totti. Toni, in particular, was
unlucky. He came into the tourna

years, and the Fiorentina marksman was as good a centre forward as any in the tourna
ment. However, his two-goal tally
didn’t tell the story of his unselfish work, often as a lone forward, his bad luck in hitting the woodwork on a number of occasions, and the more greedy nature and poor choices of some teammates when Toni s had taken up a more threaten
ing position. But one man stood out above
navaro. I ’m certain football fans
would rather see an artiste than an artisan winning the award. But for as good as Zidane
was against Spain and Brazil, providing the most memorable displays of flair and individual brilliance in the competition, he was invisible as France crawled out of their group. On the other hand, Can
navaro produced a seven-game defensive masterclass that mer ited the title, to go along with his winners’ medal. Add Zidane’s upsetting
departure from the big stage, and there was only one winner in my eyes. To then be told the vote was
carried out at half-time in the final said all you have to know about FIFA, especially after Cristiano Ronaldo was farcical ly overlooked in favour of Ger many’s Lukas Podolski for the Young Player award. As annoying as some of
Ronaldo’s antics were in the tournament, he was surely the pick of the youngsters on dis play, given that Lionel Messi was not fully fit in the build-up to the tournament and strug gled for a starting berth in the Argentina side. Podolski was half of the best
strike partnership, along with Golden Boot winner Miroslav Klose, but was poor in Ger many’s first two games, and largely anonymous in the quar ter and semi-finals. But it was fitting that Ger
many carried off a number of awards after a tournament in which they won over so many people of different nationalities with their hospitality and brand of vibrant football. As Noel Gallagher of Oasis
said in an interview on FIFA’s official website: “If I was in charge I'd have it (the World Cup) in Germany all the time and just be done with it!”
