RBL stalwart dies at 86

COMMUNITY sta lw a r t Mr Walter Brayshaw, who dedicated most of his life to the Clitheroe branch of the Royal British Legion and other local organisations, died on Monday aged 86. Born in Clitheroe, Mr

Brayshaw, pictured, who at tended Ribblesdale School, worked at Primrose Mill until' 1939, joining the Royal Naval Reserves the day after war was declared. During the war, he was attached to the 41st Royal Marine Commando unit and at one point was stationed on a ship docked at Liverpool. It was through this posting, that he met his wife, Edith, who was working in a local ammunitions factory and they later tied the knot at Garston Parish Church in 1944. After the war, Mr Brayshaw

worked as a linesman with the Electricity Board, joining the Royal British Legion in Lan caster, a move which would prove to be a huge part of his life from that moment on. During that time, he was a

member of the branch service and poppy appeal committees and acted as branch standard bearer, while, in 1952, he was runner-up in the North Lan cashire County Standard Bear er competition. A year later he moved back

to Clitheroe and took over the posts of poppy appeal organis er and branch secretary, serv ing for 10 years as the former and nine years in the latter po sition. The branch standard bearer for nine years, he was runner-up in the East Lancs County Standard Bearers’ competition five times. In the early 80s he resumed

the post of branch secretary and was reappointed as a mem ber of the East Lancs County Committee in 1983, a position he had held for seven years from 1955. Mr Brayshaw was also the

founder and a staunch sup porter of both youth sections, representing the Clitheroe Branch of the Royal British Legion at local events and at tending numerous conferences on its behalf. He was awarded the branch

However, one of Mr

Brayshaw’s greatest achieve ments was the work he did for the Royal British, Legion’s poppy appeal. In 1988 he re ceived the North West Area Poppy Day Trophy for in creasing the annual collection by 84% in three years and the Bill Roberts Memorial Trophy for progress and efficiency.

This outstanding and meri

torious service was recognised when the Royal British Legion presented Mr Brayshaw with its highest honour - the Gold Badge. During his lifetime, Mr

Brayshaw was also heavily in volved with Clitheroe Pipe Band, the 800 Committee, Clitheroe Town Band, Clitheroe Majorettes and the Ribble Valley Netball Associ ation. He was also a warden at St James Church in Clitheroe.

His passion for Clitheroe

Town Band continued throughout his life with Mr Brayshaw organising a float for the band in Clitheroe’s last torchlight procession. Mr Brayshaw, who lived in

Clitheroe almost all of his life latterly at Siddows Ave, before failing health forced him to move to Hope House Nursing Home at Clayton-le-Moors three years ago, had been look ing forward to seeing the band perform at Hope House this Saturday.

“He was always so commit

ted to Clitheroe and enthusias tically supported so many or ganisations. His passion for Clitheroe Town Band never faded,” commented his daugh ter, Valerie. Mr Brayshaw leaves behind

certificate of appreciation, as well as area and county certifi cates, while the Clitheroe branch itself, much to Mr Brayshaw’s delight, picked up the W. H. Barnes Memorial Trophy for progress and effi ciency four times.

his son, John, daughter Valerie, his daughter-in-law, Karen, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A funeral will be held on

Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St James Church in Clitheroe. Any do nations should be made to .Clitheroe Town Band.

fhere^s a land that isn't far away,

And once more I hold you tight,

I go there every night, Where I see you in my dreams,

And you're not by my side.

Yet, when the dawn arrives,

With the ache I feel inside, For when I had idyou by my side,

Once more my heart is breaking.

And life has never been the same,

Ever since you went away.

GARNER Norman

No one on earth can take your dad's place. I shed my tears from an aching heart. When others are asleep. No one knows my lonely days, .. Or how I miss his loving ways.
