For quality and DIY store will take I
trade from others I NOTE from your headlines last week ■ that an application for planning per mission to build the proposed Home- base DIY superstore has been resub mitted to Ribble Valley Borough Council. , I believe that this application will be
granted in'spite of the fact that the proposed store will have the effect of reducing trade from the already estab lished shops in Clitheroe. This will not only be those dealing in DIY goods but in many other non-related items which will be sold by the proposed store. The planning submission is appar
ently supported by a report which refers to the impact on existing local traders. This is from an independent company of retail surveyors, one which I suspect was contracted to produce such a report by the applicants. If this
. is so I would suggest that it be taken at face value only. From the reported contents which
claimed that: the proposed store would attract more visitors and therefore more trade to existing businesses, the fact that if a garden centre was added to the proposed DIY property it would stop trade being lost to the town. The fact that the establishment of the pro posed store would claw back sales already lost to the town and boost the overall sales of those existing business es is in my opinion all fabricated

bunkum. The applicants wish this store to be built only for the benefit of their financial gain and at the cost of the livelihoods of existing traders.' In spite of what the people of the
town or indeed the Clitheroe Town and Ribble Valley Borough Councils decide, this store will be built. I say this because if planning permission is denied, the applicant company will appeal the decision and will support that appeal by use of their vast wealth in attempts to prove their points. The councils do not have the public finance to defend their position and if they lose the appeal they could well bear the brunt of the applicant’s costs as well as their own. Money rules and truth car ries no weight.whatsoever in matters such as this. Clitheroe is a market town. It is what it is just because it is what it is and should be kept that way.

Loss of jobs is a
worn-out excuse I, DESPITE Nigel Evans’ apparent reservations, would gladly welcome a shop such as Homebase being opened in Clitheroe. ■Why? There is a plethora of cafes,
eateries (mainly for tourists or visitors), various hair salons, beauty salons, book shops, newspaper shops and so forth, but it is very thin on the ground for
freedom of choice where DIY items are concerned. I am sure, like many readers who don't have access to cars or similar transport, that they, as I, are fed up of travelling to nearby Blackburn or else where to get items not available here. Added to that, all the larger stores
are now situated outside that town - again making it difficult for anyone without transport to reach them - nigh on impossible. Bringing such a store here would be well situated and central ly located for easy access. All the major supermarkets in the
town, for example, have a marked price difference in groceries from one another giving people the freedom to choose where they want to shop for items to suit their own financial circumstances. There appears to be no such choice where DIY is concerned in this town and, really, there should he. 'We are not all, for example, living in executive, homes nor flats that have sprung up in the area to the cost of affordable hous ing over the last few years. The argument that jobs will be lost
is, I have to say, a weak and well-used and worn out one. Any store which has built up a dedicated client base over the years and is well-established should cer tainly not fear the competition because they will cater, as always, for the items and people they have served since opening. Clitheroe will not become a ghost town overnight that is for cer tain. ■When I go to other towns and parts of the country I am always amazed by
the choice on offer yet we are out in the wilderness here with some things. So, let's welcome Homebase and not
place excuses in the way. Shoppers should be given a freedom of choice and if it creates jobs for the area’s unem ployed that can be only a good thing, too? So, let's have that freedom and not.
drive those locals out to other towns when they should be able to purchase those very items here, locally.

Rail station photos
- different dates I WAS very pleased to see the compar ison photographs of the railway sta tion in the January 5th edition of the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, but I
. fear that the suggested dates are incor- ■rect.
,
- The covered footbridge, not shown, was erected by Messrs Read Bros, of Burnley in October 1883 at the south end of the station. They also contract-
■ ed to extend and raise the platforms and build a ladies waiting room on the west side platform. The total cost was about £5,000. In June 1883, the Lancashire and
Yorkshire Railway Co. was approached by the town council to make an access road from Back Com mons Road (Kirkmoor Road), to the
station, but they refused. They were, however, willing to construct an open ing to the public footpath, but by August, when the contractors work was coming to an end, they had agreed to build the road providing that the town council supplied the materials. Just a final point. The Station Hotel
• was built in 1892 despite what the refurbished plaque says.

Why have such a
holiday closedown? I HAVE been very disappointed with Clitheroe over the Christmas period. My grandchildren have been stay
ing and were hoping to visit the swim ming pool, which unfortunately has been closed for quite a while. So they asked to visit the Castle, but I had to tell them that also was closed.
: On Christmas Eve I rang the tourist information office to see what we could do during the following week, but I presume it was closed as each time I tried, I got the answer phone. I then went to Whalley Library, think ing I might need some books! That was also closed. Why are recreational amenities closed at holiday time?
