cricket, doughnuts and tea, the Lahore ‘in-set’ in the Imran Khan Enclose at the Gadaffi Stadium were in boisterous form. Nowhere else in the world can the electric atmosphere of cricket in the sub continent be recreated. MEMBERS of Slaidburn Sil ver Band gave a fitting musical tribute to one of their longest- serving members. Mr Bill Worswick (83), had

been a band member for 41 years. He died suddenly on December 21st. At a service of thanksgiving

for his life, held at St Andrew’s Church in Slaidbum, musicians

: played two pieces ,“Ashokan” and “Deep Harmony”, which is traditionally known as the bandsman’s hymn. Bom and brought up in Dun-

sop Bridge, Mr Worswick lived in the village all his life. He took a great interest in the village and its surrounding country side. Radio, computers and photography were among his hobbies, but Slaidburri Silver Band was his great passion. ■ Twenty years ago he retired

from his job driving the Slaid bum to Ciitheroe bus. His vehi

cle provided much more of a community service rather than just transporting people. Mr Worswick would take local papers and orders from the butchers to people’s homes. On a Thursday evening he would also pick up band members and take them to and from rehearsals. In 1964 Mr Worswick was

one of the founder members of the re-formed Slaidburn Silver Band; helping to get it up and running again. He was also very ■ influential in getting younger members involved. Three cur- • rent members, John and Alison Cowking and Catherine Hilton, were all taught by Mr Wor swick and have him to thank for . their continuing membership. Originally a comet player, Mr

Worswick went on to play the baritone and was hand treasur er for most of the time he was a member.

Savouring the atmosphere and ambience of ths

occaaon, the result of the game for me was indden- tal. This enhanced the appreciation of exquiatc strokeplay and clevrer one day bowling and field ing alongsijde the all-day sideshow of the crowd, which included enthusiastic young women keen to signal the fours and sixes of their heroes from both teams. ' A walk outside the ground at the interva' allowed further opportunity to “go native” and enjoy the delicacies from the street stall vendors namely com on the cob and more tea and dough nuts. It was also time to acknowledge that I had been consumed by the experience and desperately wanted part of me to become Pakistani, thus the acquisition of a Pakistan flag to wear as a cape, 'This was very fitting for the second half of the

game, when on a number of occasions I was tc lead the enclosure in many renditions of the Pak istan (Zinzabad) forever chant. This gesture or ■ my part was certainly appreciated by the Lahore crowd, for which I received many plau dits.”
