Leisure figures fall as charges bite
by Natalie Cox
CHARGES introduced a t a Clitheroe car park have caused a “massive” drop in daytime atten dance at Roefield Leisure Centre. Centre manager Tony Rodia says
in six months the decision to make Edisford Car Park a short-stay facili ty has resulted in a 16% reduction in usage. He says the impact has been felt
most by vulnerable groups including mums and tots and those on low incomes. Now, in a bid to get people back to
flu *
exercise, Roefield Leisure is launch ing a pilot scheme offering a refund towards parking fees for anyone tak
ing part in off-peak keep fit classes., • Customers would need a mininum two-hour parking ticket costing 70p and under the new scheme they will be reimbursed with 40p on a subse-, quent visit to the centre on produc tion of the valid car park ticket. The council’s Street Scene Manag
er Mr Graham dagger said news of., the scheme being introduced at Roe field was a “surprise” to him. “The council was not aware of this propos al,” said Mr dagger. “It comes as a surprise to us and there has been no discussion with us, but if it is some thing Mr Rodia feels would be bene^ ficial to Roefield that is for him to decide.”
. ® An interim assessment of the
effect of car park charges on the Edisford site was brought before
members of Ribble Valley Borough Council’s Community Committee on Tuesday night. A report to members said the deci
sion to change the car park’s designa tion had been taken in March 2005. As a result it would become a year- round short-stay car park and the “refund” facility for users of Ribbles- dale Pool and Roefield Leisure Cen tre would be removed. The report added tha t three
months later councillors agreed to introduce an additional short stay tariff and review the removal of the refund system in a year, with an interim assessment after six months. Information provided to commit
tee members after the six-month appraisal shows that the number of transactions at the car park was up.
but income was down due to tariff changes and the new lOp charge. The report concluded that as no refunds are now made the income retained by the council is “up broadly in line with predicted expectations”. Statistics included in the report
show that attendance at Ribblesdale Pool was down by less than 3% but income was up by more than 2%. For Roefield a summary of attendance showed a fall of approximately 16%. The report concluded that overall
usage of the car park had increased for the six-month period compared to last year. , • However, a marginal decrease in pool attendance and a “more signifi cant reduction” on Roefield atten dance was noted.

SHEFFIELD climber Richard Haszko, pic tured here with Sir Chris Bonington, returns to Clitheroe Mountaineering Club next Thursday to give a talk on some of his adventures. His last slide show for the club was about
i ;
climbing the sea stacks around the Scottish coast in the company of a group of friends including-Joe Simpson and former England wicket-keeper Bruce French. This year he ventures further afield with the
story of two trips in 2005, where he rediscovered the joys of Himalayan mountaineering after several unsuccessful trips.
Welcome return for popular mountaineer His talk will concentrate on the ascent of a
21,000 ft peak in Nepal, but will also touch on his recent expedition to the Indian Himalaya with Sir Chris Bonington, for whom he had worked for several years. , Richard, who has a number of friends in Clitheroe Mountaineering Club, is a regular attendee of the club’s events. The slide show will take place at the club’s usual third Thursday of the month evening venue, Clitheroe Cricket Club, in Chatburn Road, starting at 8 p.m. Contributions of £4 on the door from non-club members would be greatly appreciated, (s)

officer Graeme Thorpe explains: “The project sees the increase in classroom floor area in order to pro- •

Go-ahead for butcher despite protests
A BUTCHER has been granted per mission to use his Clitheroe Market cabin on non-market days despite protests from fellow traders. Mr Stuart Gradwell will use his
cabin for meat preparation purposes only, for two hours on Mondays and for four hours on Wednesdays and Fri days. ■
.
The normal market days are Tues days, Thursdays and Saturdays. Fellow stall traders raised concerns
that Mr Gradwell would not refuse to supply customers during these prepa ration periods, which could have a knock-on effect on their businesses as it may reduce patrons on market days. Stall holders subsequently signed a
petition against the use of cabins on non market days. :
' . ■ Frank Watson, market superintend
ent, also expressed reservations due to potential abuse, particularly in the lead up to Christmas, and the potential
. :
of this precedent. However, members of Ribble Valley Borough Council’s community committee, agreed this week to approve the butcher’s request to use his cabin for meat preparation purposes only, on non-market days, subject to numerous conditions and a 12-month trial. The conditions included that only
Mr Gradwell was present on site for these preparation purposes with subse quent staff only being permitted with the prior agreement of Mr Watson. • . There should also be no supply of
goods from the cabins or associated vehicles on those days and Mr Grad well must pay an additional fee of £20 per week.
*. In a letter to the council, Mr Grad
well said: “I would categorically say that I have no intention of opening on non-market days, my thoughts entirely are to use non-market days for prepa ration only.”. ' ' ■
front of the main school building. • The land on which the new build
is proposed is also one metre lower than nearby buildings and therefore considered subservient by planners. Existing tree coverage and pro
posed planting will also provide screening.
Mr Thorpe adds: “For these rea
sons, and subject to agreements on the materials to be used in the con struction of the buildings, I consid er the proposal to be acceptable in visual terms.”
Teen trekker Jack - and grandad - aim for an exhausting challenge
TEENAGE trekker Jack Hyde will set out to conquer the Three Peaks on Saturday, while his 93- year-old granddad attempts to ^ cover the same distance on his exercise bike. Jack (17), from Knowle Green,.
is all set for the 25-mile sponsored challenge, aiming to scale Pen-y- ghent, Whernside and Inglebor- ough in under 10 hours, whatever the weatherl Meanwhile, his plucky grandad, Alan Hargreaves,. will attempt to cycle the same dis- ^ tance, but without leaving the warmth and comfort of his home on Anglesey. ■ The pair are raising money for a ■ leading youth development chari ty, Raleigh International, which- specialises in providing challenging - overseas expeditions for young peo ple of all backgrounds. Jack is
looking forward to joining an expe dition to Costa Rica and Nicaragua in March. Expeditions run for 10 weeks^nd are broken down into three projects- environ ment, community and adventure. When on expedition, venturers may find themselves building a school, researching local ecosys tems or trekking through dense rainforest. All the projects help the local communities to sustain their
environment and build a better future. Jack needs to raise £3,000 and
has; already organised a bonfire night and a Christmas market. He would be delighted to hear from any individual or business that would like to sponsor him. He can be contacted by phone on 01254 ,
