Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) 8 Clithetoe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, January 12th, 2006 www.clitheroetoday.co.uk Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) Emma keeps hearts beating ■ ; : . ■ . byFaizaAfzaal p

SHE is determined to keep hearts beating ... by simply helping the British Heart Founda tion (BHF) to raise funds. For the past 12 months, Emma Taylor (pic

tured), has visited some of the most amazing parts

of the world. But the former pupil of Clitheroe Royal Gram

mar School has not enjoyed luxurious holidays

abroad. Instead she has helped to raise approximately

£450,000 to help fund life-saving research into heart and circulatory disease - the UK's biggest

killer. Emma, who is also an ex-pupil of Pendle Prima

ry School, is an events co-ordinator for the BHF's National Events team.

. The 25-year-old's job is to take groups of people

from the country trekking to world destinations in a bid to raise money for the deserving charity. She has been in the job less than a year

and has already taken groups trekking across the Southern Alps and the Great Wall of China. The charity worker, who is the daughter

of Ann and Ian Taylor, of Brett Close, Clitheroe, helps individual challengers fund-raise and offers help and advice before they jet off to destinations around the globe and during the expedition. Speaking of her "dream job", she said: "I

absolutely love this job because it is so rewarding and challenging at the same time.” The British Heart Foundation raises

money to fund pioneering research into the causes and treatments of heart disease among men, women and children as well as educational and care initiatives. Every two minutes someone has a heart

attack - only half survive - which is why the BHF funds more heart research than any other UK charity, spending £95 every minute of every day. On leaving school, Emma attended the

University of Nottingham and studied soci ology. It was there that her love for charity work was sparked. She raised money for a number of good

causes by organising a charity fashion show, a seven-legged pub crawl around the city and an annual charity ball. "I wanted to continue with the charity

work and decided to make a career out of it," she commented. "All the major charities are based in Lon

don so it seemed sensible to move down south. The BHF is a fantastic charity to work for as it needs donations urgently and heart and circulatory disease is still more likely to kill you than any other serious ill ness.

, "One of the best things about the job is

that you meet so many different people. '!lt is a very sociable job and I have built

up so many good relationships with partici pants since I started. In fact, we have already signed up a man from Clitheroe to do the Everest Base Camp Trek in 2007. "It is a great feeling to take people to

some amazing parts of the world for ch^ty and there is an enormous sense of achieve ment for everyone." - Emma is now gearing herself for further

expeditions later this year including the London to Amsterdam bike ride and the Peru Inca Trail.

PROBUS member Cliff Astin presented the second of a two-part slide presentation enti tled: “South Africa Visit”. With references to the changed social and

economic sides of the country, he said it was very much a “rainbow” society, still with some gross class distinctions, but less than in the days of apartheid.

Open to anyone over the age of 50, the meetings are held to give older members of community the opportunity to voice their concerns and opinions on facilities and services. “Older people have vast knowledge and life-expe

rience and should be supported and encouraged to influence decision-making in their lives,” said Mrs Elaine Horsfield, the Age Concern co-ordinator. Although the group has members from the Rib-,,

Fire regs force price increase

by Vivien Meath

F IR E reg u la tio n s have led to an increase in the ticket prices for this year’s Clitheroe operatic society pro duction. The popular raised seating in the St

Mary’s Centre, formerly the parish hall, was condemned last year. The seating units, which were built by

Keith Lavender 30 years ago, had been an enjoyable addition to the auditorium at the annual production, ensuring that patrons young and old could see the action on the stage. Unfortunately, they were built of wood and members were told that they presented a fire risk. As a result, for last year’s production of “My Fair Lady,” the audience was seated

in the hall at ground level and there were many complaints. This year, Clitheroe Parish Church

Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society has hired raised seating for its production of “Crazy for You” which starts on Febru ary 11th and runs to February 18th. • Regulations also mean that 70 seats -

have been lost. With costs of producing the annual and extremely popular show esca lating to some £20,000, the society has had no option but to increase ticket prices; Front stall tickets will be £8 and rear stall raised seating tickets, £10. The society is hoping that patrons will

continue to support the productions and understand that the decision to raise'prices was one which inevitably had to be made. Public booking opens on January 17th - for further details see the advert below.
