Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) I Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) Letters to the Editor Write to: The Editor, Ciithcroc Advertiser and Times, ,1 King Street, Clillieroe BB72EW Editorial e-mail; vivien.meatli@easllancsnews.co.uk — A bank raid? No, a

cycle race in town ON leaving Booth’s car park in Clitheroe at around 12-30 p.m. on August 30th, wanting to turn left and being forced to turn right, many police motorcycles caused me so much stress I ’m not sure I can put it into words. I t is now nearly four hours later and I am still shaking. On turning out of the car park,

almost immediately maybe nine or 10 police motorcycles appeared in my rear mirror, alarms sounding, blue lights flashing, with headlights and travelling very fast indeed. So, think ing I was doing the right thing, I pulled in to the left to let them pass. Wrong! They came past so fast I

couldn’t believe it. It frightened me beyond words. My friend and I sus pected a bank had been robbed or a bomb had exploded! Not so. Apparently it was due to a

cycle race! I was instructed in a very nasty

and brash way to get going, and fast. This went on for quite a few min utes... stop, no, get going. The police motorcyclists were so discourteous, with no regard whatsoever for motorists/cars. Quite a dangerous sit uation for the people in cars, not knowing whether to stay or go. On every corner for the next few

streets, weaving in and out, instruc tions were given by the police in a very angry fashion to move on. I t was just horrendous and very

upsetting.

tor. Thank you to my

terrific neighbours MAY I, via your letters page, say a

, heartfelt thank-you to all my won derful neighbours who recently went to a great deal of trouble on my behalf to avert a disaster in my home. One morning last week I got up to

find I had no water supply. I later discovered there had been a burst water main. I had to go to work, but before I

left the house I checked very careful ly to make sure none of my taps was left on for when the water supply was reinstated. Unbeknown to me, I had the show er on full so when the water came

back on the shower was running at full blast. My neighbours heard the water

running and saw that all my win dows were steamed up. No one had a phone number to contact me and they could see through the letter box a pool of water forming on my living room floor. The water was seeping through the ceiling. I did not come straight home from

work and thankfully my neighbours took the decision to climb through an upstairs window at considerable risk to turn off the water. When I got home from work I

found a note telling me what they had done and towels on the floor to soak up the water. I have not lived here very long,

and don’t even know some of the people who did me this enormous favour. Thank you to everyone. I am

deeply grateful to you. You are the epitome of good neighbours.

Profit comes first

for water company THE incident at Knunck Knowle Pumping Station, which led to Unit

ed Utilities being fined £10,000 is not an isolated incident. Only five weeks ago I had occasion

to contact the Environment Agency regarding the pollution of a small brook which passes under Henthorn Road, a process not without its diffi culties and frustrations due to the automation of its so-called “hot line”. Because of th e very apparent

thirst of a group of in-calf heifers grazing in the fields to the rear of my property I checked the brook and found it to be highly contaminated with what I believed to be sewage, the stench of which was horrendous. I also reported the incident to the

Ribble Catchment Conservation Trust whose intervention, no doubt, brought a speedy response from the Environment Agency. My reasons for taking this action

were two fold: 1) The brook appears to be the

only source of drinking water for cat tle (including dairy cows currently being milked) grazing in the fields on either side of Henthorn Road. 2) This small brook enters the

larger Pendleton Brook which in turn discharges into the River Rib ble some 500 yards downstream. I was subsequently informed by

the Environment Agency that the pollution was due to a malfunction of the pumping station in Fairfield

Drive. The problem has now been resolved and the brook is running clear once again. However, I have to say that it is a

sad reflection on United Utilities that this should happen less than 12 months since the previous incident. This is an indication of the deteri

oration of the services now being offered by the private companies who took over from the public utili ties whose primary concern appears to be profit for their shareholders and very high remuneration for their directors.

Remember tale of

the widow’s mite I AM replying to the letter headed: "A concept which is now long forgot ten" (August 31st). Remember the widow's mite. The

last £1 coin from the writer of the letter is worth more to God than the £20 note put on the plate from some one who can well afford it.

Susan’s work is recognised

A LONG-SERVICE award was present ed to a Royal British Legion worker from Clitheroe. Mrs Susan Garner, steward at the

legion’s club in Whalley Road, received a certificate marking a decade’s involvement in benevolent work. The award was presented by Mr Leslie

Allen, President of Clitheroe Royal British Legion, in honour of the work she does for SSAFA - the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association. Mrs Gamer, who described the award as

“an honour” explained what the welfare work involves: “If a client falls on hard times and needs something like a new cooker, they get in touch with me and I fill in the relevant forms and send them off to the regiments. Once the money comes through I then go and make the purchase.” Mrs Garner combines her benevolent

work with her job as steward of the RBL club, a position she has held for the past 26 years Since the death of her husband, Nor

man, she has worked at the club alongside her daughter, Sarah. Our photograph shows Mr Allen pre

senting the certificate to Mrs Gamer. (S010906/4)

Yorkshire’s three peaks beckon for scuba-clad trio!

ON Saturday a trio of intrepid enthusiasts will be attempting to walk Yorkshire’s three peaks wear ing scuba diving gear. Setting off at sunrise to climb

Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough will be Whalley’s Ben Warren, Sam Bentley, of Blackburn, and Steven Hethering- ton, of Colne. The 21-year-olds who met at St

Mary’s Sixth Form College in Blackburn, will be donning tanks, diving jackets, 41b weight belts and breathing apparatus - but not flip pers - for their walk. The aim of their unusual expedi

tion is to help raise money to send 1

Ben to Fiji and Madagascar to spend five months working as a research assistant for a coral con servation programme. Describing his pending tropical

trip as a “once in a lifetime oppor tunity”, Ben said he hoped this weekend’s sponsored walk would help him raise the £6,000 he needs. A former pupil of Whalley Pri

mary School and St Augustine’s RC High School, Billington, Ben went on to complete a degree in geological oceanography at the University of Bangor. Said Ben: “I have always had a

love of the ocean and coral and' decided that instead of having a

year out that I would do some thing worthwhile. I will be under taking the expedition with the NGO Frontier.” In April he will spend 10 weeks

in Fiji, return to his home in Clitheroe Road for jthree weeks, and then head to Madagascar. During his time abroad he will be working with local fishermen, scuba diving on the reefs, carrying out scientific research including monitoring coral growth and meas uring fish, and helping local school children. Once he returns to the UK, Ben hopes to join the Navy.

• THERE is slill time - but only just - to reg ister for the British Heart Foundation’s “Three Piers Walk”, taking place in Blackpool this Sunday. This 4.5-miie circular sponsored walk is

suitable for everyone. It will be started at noon from the end of the North Pier by the Mayor of Blackpool and will continue along the promenade, down the Central Pier and on

to South Pier before returning to the starting point. There is no entry fee, but the organisers ask each participant to raise sponsor money on behalf of the BHF. Last year the walk raised almost £10,000 and organisers hope to better this. For more information contact Jo Millett on
