AN epileptic colony was formally opened at Langho by the Earl of Derby. Housing 272 patients, the £100,000 complex was the first public building of its kind in the country.
Staff at the facility hoped to discover
more about the condition. • Newton and Slaidburn Horticultural
and Industrial Society’s annual show was held in the Friends’ school rooms and playgrounds. Slaidburn Brass Band performed and
there was much close competition in the categories.
Tour of Britain’s flying visit to Clitheroe, and I reckon it was only pure dumb luck that the fourth wasn’t a factor. Stage two of the UK’s premier long-distance cycle race swept through part of Clitheroe around noon last Wednesday. Blink and you would have missed it, but for the 10 minutes-or-so from the first cyclist arriving to the last straggler leaving, the chances of a serious road accident in that part of town must have risen twentyfold. It was fantastic to see this prestigious
T
sporting event return to the Ribble Valley and it brought enthusiastic crowds of race followers from across the UK. Thrilling stuff, and with thrills there can also be spills. Remember, this race was on public roads
that remain largely open throughout, but the danger can be considerably lessened by competent marshalling. The fast-moving cavalcade of motorcyclists was certainly impressive. There must have been 50 or more, a mix of police outriders and civilian race marshals and stewards, all moving at speed. This is clearly a precisely planned and executed operation. The advance party of police riders arrived ahead of the leading cyclists and positioned
themselves to block any junctions with the race route. From my vantage point, opposite the

Platform Gallery, that meant blocking the mini-roundabout outside Dawsons and the exit from Booths car park. All appeared to be going smoothly, but then, as the cyclists drew near, it seemed these motorcyclists were given radio messages to move to their next location and off they sped. So now, with the cyclists just moments
away, there were no road blocks in place, no barriers, no police officers or stewards on foot. Cars and vans arrived and ambled around the roundabout, completely oblivi ous to the high-speed cavalcade of motorcy clists, cyclists and support cars about to veer around the blind bend - fully expecting the road beyond to be clear and not about to brake for anjdhing. Other motorists pulled out of Booths car
park straight on to the race route, perhaps wondering why all the crowds were there, why some were gesticulating at them. It is easy to blame these drivers, but they had not come to see a cycle race and probably had no idea it was on. They had come to do their shopping and there was no one official to tell them what to do. It was left to spec tators to prevent some turning out of
LOOKING BACK 50 years ago
THE fifth road accident to occur on the notorious Sawley Brow since a motor cyclist was fatally injured in a collision with a car while descending the hill on August, 13th, involved three cars on Sun day afternoon. No one was injured, but two of the cars were damaged. • Five Clitheroe families would soon be
making a new life in Canada. Mr Dennis Venn, of Garnett Road, was off gold min ing in British Columbia. The second man, was Mr M. Czarnogrebel, of Waterloo Road. This mass exodus followed the visit of a Canadian Immigration Officer.

a s t week my young son and I were taken to a football match.
This was a great experience,
particularly for my son who had never been to a “big” match before. We were very kindly taken
by some home supporters and thus sitting in the home stand. However, there was a slight
problem in th a t both of us have been lifelong supporters of the away team! Thus, for 90 minutes we had to keep quiet, sit on our hands
Booths towards Dawsons and into the path of the cyclists. Some still turned the other way.
As the lead group arrived, more motorcy
clists came immediately ahead of, around and behind them, briefly blocking the junc tions again. But there was a few minutes’ gap between the leaders and the main group and, once again, bemused motorists found their way on to the race route, a potential disaster looming. As the racers and their outriders arrived, several motorists had no choice but to get out of the way as quickly as possible and sit tight. It really was only good fortune that there
wasn’t a serious, even fatal, accident. The outriders, the support car drivers and the cyclists themselves are all highly skilled, but at those speeds it would make little differ ence if a car suddenly pulled into their path. As soon as the main group had passed,
traffic was back in Station Road, leaving one straggling cyclist to negotiate his way round a bus, screaming at people to get out of his way as he went. Surely for the brief time it took for the

cycle race to pass through town, the route could have been blocked completely to traf fic, or at the very least kept s^e by marshals on foot. Who would really mind a 10-minute wait if it helps to avert a potential disaster? I hope the race returns, but I hope it is

THE town’s torchlight procession cele brated the royal wedding of the Prince of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer, which had taken place in July. The event was praised by the Mayor of Clitheroe as “the finest show the town has ever staged”. ® Sabden held its second country-style
street market, attended by around 12,000. Approximately £500 was raised for the
village’s “disabled appeal” from the attractions, which included a bouncy cas

This experience got me
the impression to others that we are more successful, richer, happier or more confident than we really are.
I t can be exhausting trying
to keep up a mask to others, but we are afraid that if others really knew what we were like they would not love us, accept us, or want to be our friend. Our problem simply is rejec
tion. The good news of Chris tianity is that we do not have to pretend in front of God. 'The Bible is full of examples
of people coming to God warts and all” and finding
acceptance and healing. The Bible tells us that God
knows us anyway: “you are familiar with all my ways”
(Psalm 139 v 3) and that He will never reject us: “See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands” (Isaiah 49 vl6). We may pretend in front of
others, but there is no point in pretending before God, for the good news is - nothing we do will make God love us less and there, is nothing that we can do to make God love us more.
