Reunion for ex-Marine
FORMER Royal Marine Commando Brian Beniston was this week dusting off his prized green beret and polishing his medals for a memorable parade this weekend. Mr Beniston (70), of Billington, served
in the Royal Marine Commandos for 14 years, rising to the rank of Lance Corporal. Tomorrow he will travel by train to the
Marines’ tra in in g base a t Lympstone, Devon, to help mark the diamond anniver sary of the Royal Marines Association. Reunited with old comrades from across
the UK and abroad, he will march in Sun day’s parade as the culmination of a week end of events and activities to mark the 60th birthday. His trip has been organised by S t Dun-
stan’s, the national charity which supports blind ex-Service personnel, as Mr Beniston is virtually blind and uses a guide dog. However, he will not let his disability
stop him from taking part in many of the weekend’s activities, including trying out th e rifle range and p a r t of th e a s sau lt course! Other highlights will include a guided
tour of the Lympstone base, a visit to the Marines’ museum and a concert by the Band of the Royal Marines on Saturday night. “I ’m really looking forward to i t all,'
said Mr Beniston. “I went to th e 50th anniversary 10 years ago and i t was great to see a lot of old pals I hadn’t seen for years. They come from all over th e world for these reunions.” The motto of the Royal Marines Associ
ation is “once a Marine, always a Marine” and Mr Beniston personifies th a t motto. He was p a rt icularly looking forward to marching in the parade, adding: “I t makes you feel really proud.” In November, M r Beniston will also
travel to the Cenotaph, in London, for the annual Service of Remembrance.
‘White rose’ venue for naturalists
A TRIP over the county border for a walk in Yorkshire’s “B ronte c o u n t ry ” was enjoyed by members of Clitheroe Natu ralists Society. The group followed a section of The
Ferndean Way to Winewall then, after a shor t climb, paused to admire extensive views looking west towards Pendle Hill and Lothersdale. The route then went along a high level
path to Lumb Spout, a local beauty spot se t in a picturesque valley of oak, alder and mountain ash. After a lunch stop watched by a solitary
heron, the party continued on to enter the wild barren landscape of the Lancashire moors to follow the footpath to the lovely hamlet of Wycoller, where time was spent exploring th e ruins of Wycoller Hall - Ferndean Manor in Charlotte B ronte’s “Jane Eyre”. Grouse, pheasant and kestrel were seen
an d several m ig ra to ry birds were st il l busy feeding. Also, more than 50 different flowers were recorded. Chairman Mrs M. Caruthers thanked
the walk leader, C. Pickles. Members are asked to note a change in
th e programme for Saturday, September 9 th, when the outing will be to Ayrton. Please ring J. Trotter on 428117 to book.
