R im in g to n ................ 5 Peel Park.....................1 A HAT-TRICK from Jon Penman helped Riming ton overcame a gutsy Peel Park on Saturday. ■ As early as the 10th minute. Penman latched onto a long hall to volley home from the edge of the box. His second came when

he a guided a header home from Teriy Nelson's pin-point free kick. The visitors had their

moments, and Kershaw dived to his left to cling on to one goalbound effort, and dived bravely at the feet of an on-rush- ing forward to deny a cer tain goal. In the second half, an

Coulter and Nelson com bined again, for the full back to race onto an astute flick to fire in his first of the season. And Braithwaite had a

major part to play in the fifth as he won the ball in his own half and set off on a typical jinking run, before finding Penman, who selflessly squared for Coulter to made no mis take. As the home side

pressed on in search of more goals, the visitors took full advantage and played through the vacant midfield to net, much to the disappoint ment of keeper Kershaw and his defenders. Braithwaite admits

Hellifield.................................... 2 Waddinglon..............................2 WADDINGTON gained a valu able league point at Hellifield on Saturday. With fellow title challengers

Skipton LMS losing to Gargrave, the villagers retained top spot in

(.T the Craven League. Waddington got off to the worst

possible start, going a goal down in th e second minute when the ir defence failed to deal with a long throw in. But midway -through the first half, the locals were lucky to score

an equaliser when Rob Lloyd latched on to a mis-kicked clear ance to score from close range. Waddington could have found

themselves behind immediately from the restart when Parsons was outpaced, only for the Hellifield forward to fire wide with only the keeper to beat. That was brief respite as Helli

field went back in front 10 minutes from the break with an exact repli-. ca of their first. In the second half, Lloyd's well-

struck shot hit the bar, and Dean put the rebound over.

Martin Cane twice headed good

opportunities wide, but Wayne Boothman made no mistake when he slotted home from close range to give Waddington a deserved equaliser. Other chances fell and were

missed by Andy Haworth and Tim Fagan, and Cane's shot at the end of a good run was well saved. Waddington face a tough home

fixture on Saturday when they entertain Embsay at Twitter Lane. Kick-off is at 2 p.m., and all play ers are asked to meet at the ground no later than 1-15 p.m.

CLITHEROE RUFC's scheduled game against Fylde Saracens on Satur day was called off late on Friday evening, when the opposition failed to raise a side. At the moment there is

some confusion as to any points deduction penalty, and the fixture is provi sionally pencilled in to be replayed this Saturday (3 p.m.). On Sunday, a Olitheroe

XV were pleased to accept the in-vitation of Skipton RFO to play in a memorial fixture for a former player. This was especially fit

ting as the family hail from the Olitheroe area. Olitheroe lost 29-26 in

an entertaining, all-action game. Olitheroe were honoured

to play a small part in what was a poignant after noon.

Clilheroe C o l ls .........15 Glossop B Colls........ 49 THE scoreline belies a match in which the home side came of age against the leaders. Olitheroe, with only 14

players, lookdd and played like a team, and impressed spectators in the first 10 minutes with a display of attacking rugby which began with a steal from the -visitors. And from a penalty just

outside the Glossop 22, Glitheroe's Lafranceschina put a marker down that the locals meant business. Unfortunately, Glossop

began to take advantage of their extra man, and by running the ball wide they scored their first of four first half tries. But before the end of

the half, Glitheroe also went over through flanker Alex Newton.

Just before the half

time whistle, Joe Lee took an accidental knock to the head in an heroic defensive tackle which ended his game, and left the home side two men down. In the second half Glos

sop took advantage of their overlap and ran in more tries to capitalise on their advantage. The Glitheroe work-rate

was exemplary in trying to cover the gaps - effort which was rewarded once more when Simon Gowgill off loaded to Jacob Shorrock to power over the line, Lafranceschina kicking the conversion. The Golts next home

match at Littlemoor Park is on Sunday, October 22nd when they welcome Liverpool Gollegiate, kick off 12-30 p.m.

Knockouts decided

TWO of the three men’s knockout finals were played at Whalley Golf Glub on Sunday. The President’s Putter greensomes

final was won by Danny Liles and Roger Altham, who were level par gross in beat ing Ghris Blackadder and John Sherry by 2 and 1. Liles sealed -victory by dri-ving onto the

green on the 322-yard 17th hole, and Altham stroked the remaining 70 foot putt to within two inches of the hole. The Postlethwaite Gup singles final

was also a close-fought affair between Mike Gonroy and Rob Hilton. All square after 12 holes, Gonroy won

four holes in succession to take the title by 4 and 2. On Saturday, members competed in

the September medal. The ever-consistent Mel Earle took

top spot with 78-10-68. Ghris Blackadder (78-6-72) took the

and Gill McDonnell were joined by-Eric Parman and Steve Hardy to total 42 points and win the open mixed team event at Stonyhurst Park. They needed a card play-off to edge out

home members Betty and John Austin and Glitheroe’s Eileen and Ian Lambert. Stonyhurst’s Joyce and Malcolm Keny on were joined by L. and J. Bury to take

third place. The ladies team of three stableford was

won by Margaret McAllester, Gill McDonnell and Sheila Parman with 77 points. Two points adrift were Joyce Kenyon, Frances Lee and Kathleen Hargreaves

the Maureen Ormerod three clubs and a putter event ahead of lady captain Mar garet Duckett and Gewn Park. The Daily Mail Foursomes qualifier

was played in torrential rain but that did not stop Betty Austin and Susan Kirk netting 77 Vz to beat Margaret Garring- ton and Joyce Kenyon into second place. Lynn Scholes was back at the top of

the leaderboard with a nett 76 to edge out Sheila Parman and Anne Hudson. And she made it a hat-trick of wins in

the .Shirebum Trophy when her 33 points were enough to beast Betty Austin and janette Dowdy. The latter improved by two places to

win the September Medal ahead of Betty Austin and Margaret Duckett. The Hales fell at the final hurdle in

Glitheroe GC’s Mixed Knockout Final, Sarah and father Simon lost in the final

to the more experienced Helen Maginn and veteran Brian Stokes by four and two. Peter Gatlows season ended on a high

with a brilliant nett 65 to take the First Division of the medal but Daniel Preedy confirmed his quality with a nett 66 off six to take second. Simon Swindells and Michael Heaps

both returned 69s but Simon's better back nine gave him the edge for third. Paul Wood continues to figure in the

prize lists and his nett 70 was good enough to win the Second Di-vision. Gary Moores eased into second spot

with the same 72 as third placed Roger Williams, leaving Brian Edmondson -with a shout for fourth prize -with a creditable 73.

Andrew Heesom, who else? took the

gross prize with a level par 71. Gillespie and Dean invited Tim Stanley

to join them in the three man team event and it proved a successful partnership. They had a winning margin over Miles

Wade, Gary Speak and Mike Tattersall to claim first prize. Scott Redfearn had a nett 70 return to

take the junior medal prize with a clear ■winning, margin over the impro-ving Andy Mercer.
