ums are set to rise by an average of 16%. Norwich Union puts the increase down to a corresponding growth in claim costs over recent years resulting from personal injury claims made by members of the public. The news will come as a hammer blow to
motorists - and especially to those in high risk groups, such as young men, who may see their premiums rise by as much as 40 %. The Association of British Insurers has
pointed out that costs have risen in several areas including that of personal injury. Another key problem is that of uninsured
drivers. There are estimated to be around one million uninsured drivers on the road and the rest of us pay approximately £30 extra on our yearly premiums to compen
sate for this. Whether making the cost of car insur
ance even more prohibitively expensive is the answer remains to be seen.

T first glance, Bentley would appear to be a company mar- .keting two distinct product
families. On the one hand, there are the
modern Continental models, cars developed since the illustrious com pany was bought by Volkswagen. Then there is the Arnage saloon
and the Azure convertible. It would be an injustice to the excellent Con tinental family to call these original cars “proper Bentleys”, but that is often an underlying perception among owners. For this year, the Arnage range
has been given even more power and a raft of design improvements. First introduced in 1959, the V8
engine that powers the Arnage is, in today’s trim, rated at 450 b.h.p. in Arnage R and long wheelbase RL trim and 500 b.h.p. if you opt for the Amage T. It has come quite some way from
the original 6.25-litre unit th a t struggled to crack 200b.h.p. It was the introduction of turbo-charging in the early ’80s that really started cranking horsepower figures sky wards and the latest generation turbo system sees the twin blowers operating with greater efficiency at low engine speeds, reaching maxi mum turbine speed in half the time of their predecessors. The camshafts and valve timing
system has also been improved. I t is easy to take progress for granted.
but some perspective is granted by the fact that the modern Arnage T not only produces 300 b.h.p. more than its 1959 predecessor, but only consumes 60% as much fuel and, thanks to improved fuel injection and exhaust controls, its emissions output is an astonishing 99% lower than Bentley’s first V8. Power is nothing without control,
however, and Bentley has quietly introduced a ZF six-speed automatic transmission to replace the old four- speederi Each Amage model has had its gear ratios especially tuned, plus there is a more sophisticated locldng torque converter that acts even more rapidly to throttle inputs, ensuring seamless acceleration. facturers now routinely offering 500 and even 600 b.h.p. saloons, the 450 b.h.p. of the old Arnage T was begin ning to look a little quaint, especial ly when the far cheaper Continental Flying Spur was good for 552 b.h.p.! Nowadays, the Araage R models
have the same output as the old flag ship Arnage T, while the latest Tmanages 500 b.h.p. This may still lag behind the 12-cylinder Spur, but with a torque figure of 7381b/ft it massively outstrips the 4801b/ft fig ure of the Continental and thus feels a good deal more imperious. Although the figures may be impressive, nothing prepares you for the moment you drop behind the wheel. Virtually everything is extravagantly, voluptuously over engineered. The turned aluminium fascia and
door inserts of the test car were beautifully finished, as was the pleated hidework on the doors and seats. You find yourself dipping switches and twisting exquisitely knurled knobs just to feel the sheer oily quality of their motion. As great as the Continental GT
and Flying Spur models are, you need to drive an Amage to get the fully-proofed Bentley experience. I t ’s like no car sold today.
