Sadness as former Valley bus conducter dies at 91

knew as “Jimmy”, passed away on Saturday after a short ill ness. Bom in Athlone, Southern Ireland, on 24th June, 1915, Mr Leonard came to England in 1947 and s ta r ted work as a trainee nurse a t Calderstones and Brockhall. In 1950, he became a bus con

ductor for Ribble bus services, eventually clocking up 25 years service. In fact, it was through the buses that he met his late wife Elaine, who was travelling from Bradford for a day out in Blackpool. They later married in 1956 and had two children

A man of principles, in his early 20s, Mr Leonard was a founder member of the “Pioneer Abstinence Movement” in Ireland and 70 years on, received his gold com memorative pin for abstaining from alcohol for all those years. Liver patient was waiting to undergo a transplant

A WEST BRADFORD man died of pneumonia and cirrho sis of the liver, an inquest heard. Peter Greenwood (59), of

Ribble Drive, died at Pendle- side Hospice in March after a long illness and was waiting for a liver transplant a t the time of his death. East Lancashire Coroner

Richard Taylor also heard that Mr Greenwood had a sus pected tumour in his sinuses. The inquest heard that Mr

Greenwood had begun to com plain of abdominal pains in May 2005 and had been given painkillers by his GP, but these had not helped and he was admitted to hospital in Blackburn for an operation on June 7th last year W his con

dition deteriorated. I t was also discovered that his liver was in a very poor condition, even though he was not a drinker. Consultant pathologist at

Burnley General Hospital Dr Zuhair Twaij, who performed Mr Greenwood’s post mortem, said that he had been suffering from bronchial pneu monia and cirrhosis of the liver, which was not due to excessive alcohol. He said: “There are many causes of this type of disease in the liver, only one of which is drinking alcohol to excess.” He was not able to check the tumour in his sinuses. Mr Taylor recorded a ver

dict of death by natural caus es.
